Ebaum's World Dot Com
Lemon Demon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time,
On the Internet there was a guy.
A very deeply flawed man,
They called him Eric Bauman.
He was a total asshole
And nobody knows why.

He travelled all around
On the pulse of each phenomenon,
From Something Awful on to Fark
With his trusty watermark;
He stole and stuck it all upon
Ebaumsworld.com.

It wasn't fair
To those from whom he stole,
But did he care?
No, not one bit.
And then he had the nads
To sell some ads.
What a piece of shit.
Oh, Eric.

Eric's quite a slut;
Other people's work has made him rich.
He hired some male prostitutes.
Dressed them up three-piece suits.
His faithful team of lawyers
Made the Internet his bitch.

'Til Lowtax came along,
Punched him in the face and banged his mom.
And Mr. Bauman, quite disgraced,
Had his dumb website erased.
Well, sadly that's a lie,
There's still an Ebaumsworld.com.

But if we all join hands
And sing this song,
Then our call will reach the sky,
And maybe Zeus and Thor
Will smite that whore.
I think it's worth a try.

Oh, Ebaumsworld is going down.
We gotta rise up from the underground
And tell Eric Bauman a thing or two
'Bout how stealing simply isn't cool.
So right now we're making that our mission,
And if the bastard doesn't listen,

We'll get sick of being lawful
And brand his ass with "SOMETHING AWFUL."

Overall Meaning

The song "Ebaum's World Dot Com" by Lemon Demon is a satirical commentary on Eric Bauman, a controversial internet figure who gained notoriety in the early 2000s for re-posting content from various websites on his own website, Ebaumsworld.com, without proper attribution or permission. According to the lyrics, Bauman was a "total asshole" who had no qualms about stealing content and profiting from it through advertisements. The song also accuses Bauman of hiring male prostitutes and using his team of lawyers to silence his critics.

The lyrics suggest that Bauman's actions were unethical and harmful to the creators of the content he stole. The singer calls for people to unite against Bauman and his website, with the hope that their collective voices will lead to its demise. The final verse proposes a plan to brand Bauman with the name of a website he allegedly stole from, emphasizing the songwriter's anger and disgust with his actions.

Overall, the song can be seen as a critique of the exploitative practices that were prevalent in early internet culture, and a call to action for creators to protect their own work against theft and exploitation.

God, it feels like so much of the 90's and early 2000's internet history is just mired in a cloud of prehistoric feeling obscurity. Whenever people talk about the history of the internet, it always starts with stuff like Reddit and Facebook type platforms, but so much of the internet was spread out to forums and proto-social networks that it might just be freaking impossible to piece together. The only sites from that era that still survive is stuff like 4chan and Newgrounds, and 4chan is intentionally not permanent and Newgrounds has had a lot gutted from it by music copyright creeps and the death of flash.

My point is that this song and the flash music video for it was huge and blew up Newgrounds because it came out at the height of an outright internet war that, I think, wound up leading to some of Anonymous's earliest roots and early notable examples of DDOS attacks on major services. Project Chanology was the first major effort, but there were very similar attacks on ebaumsworld and the actions against them very much had a similar flavor.
