At Long Last Love
Lena Horne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is it an earthquake or simply a shock?
Is it the good turtle soup or merely the mock?
Is it a cocktail, this feeling of joy?
Or is what i feel the real McCoy?

Is it for all time or simply a lark?
Is it Granada i see or only Asbury park?
Is it a fancy not worth thinking of?
Or is it at long last love?

Is it an earthquake, or simply a shock?
Is it the good turtle soup, or is it merely the mock?
Is it a cocktail, this feeling of joy?
Or is what i feel the real McCoy?

Is it for all time or simply a lark?
Is it Granada i see or only Asbury park?

Is it a fancy, not worth thinking of?
Or is it at long long long last love?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "At Long Last Love," performed by Lena Horne with Lennie Hayton and His Orchestra, have a whimsical and playful tone while also exploring the concept of love. The repeated questions of whether the feeling is an earthquake or a shock, good turtle soup or just the mock, underscores the uncertainty and confusion that often accompanies falling in love. The use of disparate references to Granada and Asbury Park, both places with different associations, further emphasizes the feeling of confusion and uncertainty.

However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that despite the questions and doubts, the singer believes that what they are feeling is "at long last love." This conclusion suggests that the preceding questions were not necessarily asked in a completely serious or logical manner but rather to express the complex and often confusing emotions that come with falling in love.

For the record... "At Long Last Love"  IS from "You Never Know."  (Sources: Wikipedia, guidetomusicaltheatre, ). My sheet music also states this and the fact that it was copyrighted in 1938 by Chappell & Co Inc. A further reference can be seen on the 1938 "Conqueror" record label for the version by Al Donahue & His Orchestra ft. vocals by Paula Kelly here on YouTube. I wouldn't be surprised if the song was written earlier though and dropped from another show.

Has dear Lena already been gone eight years or more?? It sure doesn't seem so. What a loss. So, too, to lose the beautiful Vic Damone just this past February. ..

Which Porter show was this from? I don't think I've heard this before but I love it!

This song isn't from "You Never Know". It's from "Nymph Errant"- 1933

arthurboehm

No, it isn't--it's from You Never Know. Nothing in Nymph Errant would support the song, it's musical style or lyrics.

@sickboy932 Never heard of it! What is it about? Are there any well-known Porter songs in it?
