Sayer launched his career in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, and became a top singles and album act on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1970s. His first seven hit singles in the United Kingdom all reached the Top 10 – a feat first registered by his first manager, Adam Faith. His songs have been sung by other notable artists, including Cliff Richard ("Dreamin'").

When I came home this morning
I got your letter and what it said
I didn`t understand
You told me it was over -- au revoir -- see you again sometime
I didn`t understand
And overleaf you tell me that you love me...
The usual time -- the usual place
I will be there
Meet me on the corner
I`ll see you coming -- then I`ll be sure
Sure you`ll be there
Oh and I want to tell you that I love you...
I see your face -- I see the night
I love you -- I love you
And deep in my sleep I see your eyes
I love you -- I love you
I stood on the corner
All the cars went sweeping by
Did somebody call me -- no there was no one there
Well I`ll go on waiting -- perhaps tomorrow
Another day -- I will be there
Oh and I want to tell you that I love you...
The lyrics to Leo Sayer's "When I Came Home This Morning" tells a story of a man who receives a letter from someone he loves. The letter says that it's over, but at the same time expresses love over the next page. The man is confused and doesn't understand the mixed signals he is receiving. He wants to meet the person on the corner at the usual time and place but is left waiting, unsure if the person will show up. In the end, he reaffirms his love for the person and the hope that they will meet again.
Overall, the lyrics communicate an emotional conflict that is relatable to many people. The feelings of uncertainty and longing are present throughout the song. The repetition of the phrase "I love you" is a testament to the character's depth of emotion and desire to reconnect.
In terms of musical elements, the song has a slow tempo and the use of acoustic instruments, such as the guitar and piano, create a soft and mellow atmosphere. Leo Sayer's unique singing style and vocal range bring expression to the melancholic story.

Takes me back to my secondary school days and I can honestly say this guy had an enormous impact on my emotional apprenticeship. Become a fan from day 1, not only with his Pierrot disguise but his incredible vocal range. First 3 albums were the best (SIlverbird, Just a Boy & Another Year) - unfortunately for me his music direction changed for the worse.
Too many favouties to mention but When I came home this morning was right up there - I could relate to every lyric and the explosive ending gets to me every time - timeless gem.
