Lewis was born in the London Borough of Islington, to Aural Josiah "Joe" Lewis of Afro-Guyanese descent, and Maria Lewis of Welsh, Italian and Irish descent. Her parents enrolled her at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, and from there she attended the Italia Conti Academy and the BRIT School, where she learned to play instruments such as the guitar and piano, in the hope of becoming a singer-songwriter. Lewis wrote her first full-length song at the age of 12. She initially trained in opera, but went on to singing jazz and blues, eventually leading to popular music, citing Minnie Riperton, Eva Cassidy and Stevie Wonder as her main influences. After leaving the BRIT School at 17, she took a number of jobs to fund studio time, recording a demo album called Twilight. The album, almost exclusively comprising her own compositions, was recorded under Spiral Music, a production company based in Fulham. "I tried to secure a record deal by doing things my own way. I worked very hard but I never managed to land a contract", said Lewis. Other demos were recorded under licence from UEG Entertainment, later included on an album called Best Kept Secret. However, none of Lewis's demos were released and she considered taking a hiatus from her music career to attend university until her boyfriend persuaded her to enter The X Factor which subsequently severed her connections with UEG.
Songfacts says that Collide, the first single from Leona Lewis's third album finds her taking a more dance pop route than on her previous material. She said, "I'm excited for people to see a different side to my music. I'm a fan of so many different genres and styles. For me this song has all the great ingredients of a summer anthem." The song got its first play on Scott Mills' Radio One show on July 15, 2011 and will be released on September 4, 2011.
Lewis' third studio album, Glassheart, is due for release in 2012.

Wanna stay up all night?
Wanna scream and shout, yes.
Ain’t nothing to worry about,
I can take it all, that’s right,
I’m your number one, don’t you get that?
But we love every night.
It don’t matter, it don’t matter, it don’t matter, it don’t matter,
It’s all good.
Every bird has a scar, the messed up thing that we are,
I’ll take it all, you better be ready.
I never felt like this, you shot me through my heart,
The pain never felt so good, boy, you’re my favourite scar.
I never felt like this, you shot me through my heart,
All eyes on me in the middle of the street screaming out your name
And it sound like la la-la-la la-la, you shot me through the heart,
La la-la-la la-la, you are my favourite scar.
What you wanna know about ?
Won’t mean to tell you all of my sins, yeah, you first.
One shot and you got me and this scar everybody sees on me,
Baby, it says that I’m with you.
Yeah, we fight every day,
But we love every night.
It don’t matter, it don’t matter, it don’t matter, it don’t matter,
It’s all good.
Every bird has a scar, the messed up thing that we are,
I’ll take it all, boy, you better turn up your stereo.
Funny how time flies.
I never felt like this, you shot me through my heart
The pain never felt so good, boy, you’re my favourite scar.
I never felt like this, you shot me through my heart,
All eyes on me in the middle of the street screaming out your name
And it sound like la la-la-la la-la, you shot me through the heart,
La la-la-la la-la, you are my favorite scar.
Funny how time flies.
The lyrics of Leona Lewis's song Favourite Scar express a strong emotional connection between two people who fight every day but love every night. The singer is content to stay up all night talking and screaming with their lover, with no worries at all because they can take it all. They celebrate the scars and the messed-up nature of their relationship, just like every bird has a scar. The scar is something everybody sees on the singer, and it says that they are with their lover.
The line "I never felt like this, you shot me through my heart, the pain never felt so good" shows how the pain caused by the lover is pleasurable for the singer. They also talk about the fact that the person who shot them through the heart was their favorite scar, indicating that they cherish the pain that their lover's actions bring them. This is only further reinforced when they mention that all eyes are on them in the middle of the street screaming out their love's name, and it sounds like laughter. The song seems to suggest that their relationship may be dysfunctional or even toxic, but they appreciate it nevertheless.
