I'm a Fool to Care
Les Paul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a fool to care when you treat me this way
I know I love you but what can I do, I'm a fool to care
I'm a fool to cry when you tell me goodbye
You left me so blue when you were untrue, I'm a fool to care.

I know I should laugh and call it a day
But I know I would cry if you went away
I'm a fool to care when you don't care for me
Why should I pretend I'll lose in the end, I'm a fool to care.

(I know I should laugh and call it a day
But I know I would cry if you went away)

I'm a fool to care when you don't care for me
Why should I pretend I'll lose in the end, I'm a fool to care

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Les Paul's "I'm a Fool to Care" describe the singer's struggle with his unwavering love for someone who does not reciprocate those feelings. Despite being mistreated and left feeling blue, the singer cannot help but still love this person. He acknowledges that he is a fool for caring and crying over someone who would simply dismiss him. However, he cannot help but have these emotions, and he recognizes that he will ultimately lose in the end.

The song seems to be conveying the harsh realities of love and the power it has over people. The lyrics reflect the inner turmoil that someone goes through when they love someone who does not love them back. It is a difficult thing to navigate and can leave a person feeling vulnerable, hopeless, and foolish. The repetition of the line "I'm a fool to care" emphasizes how the singer is aware of his foolishness but is unable to change his feelings towards the subject of the song.

The song was written in 1940 by Ted Daffan and has been covered by many artists throughout the years, such as Fats Domino, Ricky Nelson, and Diana Krall. It was also notably performed by Les Paul and Mary Ford, who recorded the song in 1954, making it a hit.

Nice to hear the beautiful sound of the guitar without distortion, overdrive, tons of reverb, etc..  No "shredding" necessary... just tasteful, subtle, accompaniment and simple solo add so much to the song. Good singing without the vocal acrobatics you get these days.  Nice work by Les and Mary. I could listen for hours.

I grew up next door to Hank Thompson who actually sang me one of your grandfather’s songs when I was 7. It’s what got me into playing music which is what I’ve done for a living my while life now.
