I Never Know
Lester Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You, get me feelin' crazy
There always on my mind
And I get to feelin' lately
If I never knew your name,
I'd love you all the same
But I have you to myself
Wanting nothing else
Knowing that you're mine

Good time,bad time,all the time
Hands reachin' 'cross a room
And I know somewhere inside my mind
If I never knew your name,
I'd love you all the same,
But I have you to myself
Wanting nothing else
Knowing that you're mine

Ba ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba ba

And I know somewhere inside my mind
If I never knew your name,
I'd love you all the same
But I have you to myself

Wanting nothing else
Knowing that you're mine
Have you to myself

Wanting nothing else
Knowing that you're mine...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lester Young Quartet’s song, “I Never Knew,” seem to convey a sense of intense love and admiration for someone, regardless of knowing their identity. The singer is saying that this person has placed a powerful hold on their psyche and that they constantly think about them. The singer then goes on to profess that they would love this person just as much even if they did not know their name. However, the fact that this person is now in their life makes the experience all the more special. The lines “wanting nothing else, knowing that you’re mine” give the impression that the singer is grateful for having this person in their life and that they are content with the feeling that this is enough.

The lyrics of this song evoke a sense of a deep and profound love, encapsulating a feeling that resonates with many people. The singer seems to be saying that the feeling of being in love with someone is all-encompassing and that knowing someone’s name or identity is irrelevant in the scheme of things. These lyrics could also be interpreted as a lament of sorts for lost love or a relationship that never came to fruition. The singer could be saying that even though this person may no longer be in their life or that they may have missed an opportunity to be with them, the love they have for them remains unchanged.

This NOT Lester with the Benny Goodman Septet. It is 1943 recording - very obviously Sid Catlett on drums, Slam Stewart on bass, Johnny Guarneri on piano.
