Lady Be Good
Lester Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to my tale of woe,
It's terribly sad but true,
All dressed up, no place to go
Each evening I'm awfully blue.

I must win some handsome guy
Can't go on like this,
I could blossom out I know,
With somebody just like you. So

Oh, sweet and lovely lady, be good
Oh, lady, be good to me
I am so awfully misunderstood
So lady, be good to me
Oh, please have some pity
I'm all-alone in this big city
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So lady be good to me.

Oh, please have some pity
I'm all alone in this big city
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,

So lady be good to me.
Oh lady be good to me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lester Young's "Oh Lady Be Good" depict a melancholic man who feels misunderstood and alone in the big city. The singer longs for a partner, expressing his desire to "win some handsome guy" and "blossom out" with someone like the lady described in the song. He is desperately in need of companionship, and hoping that the lady will take pity on him and be good to him.

The song's upbeat tempo contrasts with the lyrics, emphasizing the singer's desire to escape his current state of loneliness through a romantic relationship. While the tone of the lyrics is sad, the playful melody and the way in which Young sings it lightens the mood a bit. The use of metaphorical language like "lonesome babe in the wood" further emphasizes the singer's sense of isolation, as if he is lost and trying to find his way.

Overall, "Oh Lady Be Good" is a song about loneliness and the desire for connection. Its lyrics express the need for human companionship, which gives it a universal appeal that has made it a jazz standard over the years.

@Downecker

I'm 74 and play Stride on my 66 key !😂 My 2 favorite tenor sax players were Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins! I put their music on and it's a night of goosebumps !😂😅😊

Jo Jones once said this was Lester Young best recoeding

@imagine07018

True. Hate to argue with Papa, but damn, his solo on Shoe Shine Boy is a killa. But then again, we could go on all day, couldn't we? The fact is, there is no such thing as a bad Prez solo. It does not exist. Prez could drop his drawers and fart and it would still be musical.

@nosmelc1001

@@imagine07018 mean to me on tv in 1958 is unbelievable, he's both unbelievably expressive and swinging like mad just six months before he's gone.

@jazzman1954

Brilliant. Oddly no one actually plays the tune! Could it have been a studio jam recording?

@@nosmelc1001 Definitely his best appearance in the net.
