Oh Lady Be Good!
Lester Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to my tale of woe,
It's terribly sad but true,
All dressed up, no place to go
Each evening I'm awfully blue.

I must win some handsome guy
Can't go on like this,
I could blossom out I know,
With somebody just like you. So

Oh, sweet and lovely lady, be good
Oh, lady, be good to me
I am so awfully misunderstood
So lady, be good to me
Oh, please have some pity
I'm all-alone in this big city
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,
So lady be good to me.

Oh, please have some pity
I'm all alone in this big city
I tell you I'm just a lonesome babe in the wood,

So lady be good to me.
Oh lady be good to me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lester Young’s ‘Oh Lady Be Good!’ tell a tale of loneliness and the search for love. The singer, who is feeling sad and blue each evening, is hoping to find a handsome man who can bring some happiness into their life. They feel that they could “blossom out” and be happy with somebody like the person they are addressing in the song. The repeated refrain of “lady be good to me” shows their desperation for someone to fill the void in their life and ease their loneliness.

The use of the phrase ‘babe in the wood’ in the final verse is particularly poignant, as it conjures up an image of a lost and vulnerable child, helpless without guidance or support. This emphasises the singer’s sense of vulnerability and emphasises their need for someone to take care of them. The lyrics are powerful in their simplicity, conveying a sense of yearning that is relatable to many people.

@Downecker

I'm 74 and play Stride on my 66 key !😂 My 2 favorite tenor sax players were Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins! I put their music on and it's a night of goosebumps !😂😅😊

@imagine07018

True. Hate to argue with Papa, but damn, his solo on Shoe Shine Boy is a killa. But then again, we could go on all day, couldn't we? The fact is, there is no such thing as a bad Prez solo. It does not exist. Prez could drop his drawers and fart and it would still be musical.

@@imagine07018 mean to me on tv in 1958 is unbelievable, he's both unbelievably expressive and swinging like mad just six months before he's gone.

@jazzman1954

Brilliant. Oddly no one actually plays the tune! Could it have been a studio jam recording?

@@nosmelc1001 Definitely his best appearance in the net.

Lester Young played the MOST tenor in the swing era, everything he played just jelled in unexpected ways, he was the PRESIDENT🎷🎷🎷🎷
