Overtime
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes the looks I get
From people that I've never met
It's cruel
Poor hard done by you
Sometimes I hear remarks
Like he's a snake out in the grass
It's cruel
Poor hard done by you

Well, I beat around the bush alot
Don't let my felings show
'Cause if I did, I'd surely hit the roof
Maybe if you'd listened
You'd've known something was missing
What I say surely is the truth

Well I've been working on this overtime
You might think that I don't care
But if you look inside this heart of mine
You'll still be there

Some lovers won't admit
That all the pieces just won't fit
It's cruel
Poor hard done by you
So tell me that I'm blind
To let my heart go rule my mind
It's cruel
Poor hard done by you

Well I've been working on this overtime
You might think that I don't care
But if you look inside this heart of mine
You'll still be there

I've been working on this overtime
What's been done I can't repair
But if you look inside this heart of mine
You'll still be there

My wanderlust betrayed your trust
Don't want forgiving
All things must change, it ain't so strange
Life's for the living

(Baby, baby please)

Well I've been working on this overtime
You might think that I don't care
But if you look inside this heart of mine
You'll still be there

I've been working on this overtime
What's been done I can't repair
But if you look inside this heart of mine
You'll still be there

Well I've been working on this overtime
You might think that I don't care
But if you look inside this heart of mine
You'll still be there

Poor hard done by you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Overtime" by Level 42 seem to revolve around a person who is hard done by others, who judge and criticize him without even knowing him. The opening lines of the song, "Sometimes the looks I get from people that I've never met, it's cruel, poor hard done by you" refer to the way people judge him and make him feel like an outsider. The lyrics also mention the hurtful remarks that he hears about himself, such as "he's a snake out in the grass."

However, despite the hurtful words and the judgment, the artist tries not to show his emotions, "Well, I beat around the bush a lot, don't let my feelings show, 'cause if I did, I'd surely hit the roof." He then mentions that perhaps if people would have listened to him more, they would have heard that something was missing. The artist then reveals that he has been working hard on something, possibly his emotions and personal growth in overcoming the obstacles and judgment he has faced.

It is also interesting to note that towards the end of the song, the artist mentions his "wanderlust," a desire to explore and travel, which has betrayed the trust of someone close to him. But he cannot turn back time, and as he says, "What's been done, I can't repair." Despite everything, he still hopes that people will look inside his heart and see that he is still there.
