Impossible
Lifesigns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems quite impossible to me
That I can hear you singing
There′s something above me in the trees
Or is it in my head?
It seems quite impossible to me
That I can hear you crying
Someone else is calling now, it seems
And I don't hear you fall

I didn′t see the signs were incomplete
Couldn't save us from forever
Guess this was the rise before the fall
The stone was set, the die was cast
Now it's changing with the weather
Still, we shut our eyes, here comes the wall

It seems quite impossible to me
That I can hear you smiling
There′s something above me in the breeze
Or is it in my head?
It seems quite impossible to me
That I can hear you laughing
Someone else is calling now, it seems
And I don′t hear you fall

I didn't see the signs were incomplete
I couldn′t save us from forever
I guess this was the rise before the fall
The stone was set, the die was cast
Now it's changing with the weather
Still, we shut our eyes, here comes the fall

It seems quite impossible to me
That I can hear you singing
There′s something above me in the trees
Or is it in my head?
It seems quite impossible to me
That I can hear you crying
Someone else is calling now, it seems
And I don't hear you fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lifesigns' song "Impossible" convey a sense of confusion and disbelief. The singer expresses their astonishment at being able to hear someone singing, as if there is a voice coming from above them or in their own mind. They also mention hearing the person crying, but now someone else is calling and they don't hear the person fall. These lines create a sense of disorientation and uncertainty, emphasizing the singer's struggle to understand what is happening around them.

The second verse continues the theme of incompleteness and inability to save a relationship. The signs were missed or misunderstood, leading to a downfall that seemed inevitable. The phrase "The stone was set, the die was cast" suggests that the outcome was predetermined and unchangeable. Despite the realization that things are changing with the weather, metaphorically indicating instability, the singer and the other person still choose to close their eyes, bracing themselves for what is to come.

Lovely work John and co. I play this to my kids too. Thankfully they get it totally, especially my nine year old girl. Music is a great uniting force, and when it's in the blood it's that much stronger. Best wishes. Rich
