Just Friends
Linda Carriere Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From the day that I first met you
And you looked into my eyes
I could hardly believe
Love took me by surprise
And now that we are friends
I don`t want it to end
`cause I would rather lose your love
To be your friend
I guess I never told you
Exactly how I feel
`cause I believe if you knew
You`d probably just leave
Don`t know what i`d do
Without you
Be on my own again
Without you
Bridge:
Don`t understand it
If I could have planned it
How would it be
There`s no use pretending
Don`t want our love ending
No
The way I feel about you
I could never let you know
And all the feelings I have
I`m too afraid to let them show
So I close my eyes and count to ten
`cause I would rather lose your love

To be your friend
I`d rather lose your love to be your friend

Overall Meaning

In Linda Carriere's song "Just Friends", she speaks about a complicated relationship that she shares with an individual who she romantically loves, but she would rather lose their love and remain friends than confess her feelings and risk losing them altogether. The singer highlights that love came as a surprise, but now that they have formed a friendship, they don't want to lose it. However, the singer has kept their feelings to themselves as they fear how the other person might respond. They don't want to risk losing the friendship if their feelings are not reciprocated. Linda Carriere's lyrics depict how some people rather enjoy the presence of someone they love, even if they can't be with them romantically. This song is a reflection of how some relationships may exist only in the friendzone, but the people in those relationships are okay with that because being friends is a better alternative to losing them altogether.

The bridge of the song speaks about how the singer does not understand their predicament; they would not like to lose the relationship they have with the person they love, but they also cannot reveal their true feelings. Therefore, they remain friends, even though the singer's feelings mean they will never see the relationship grow into a romantic one. Linda also speaks about the fear of being alone again without the friend's support if the friendship collapses. Therefore the singer considers keeping their feelings hidden to preserve the bond they share. Linda Carriere's use of these lyrics shows how some people may choose to hide their true emotions for the sake of preserving friendship even if they have to bear the pain of suppressing their love.

If I'm not mistaken, Linda Carriere is a very well-known singer-songwriter who was a part of the 80's Dance Band called "Dynasty" which was the brain-child of Leon Sylvers (of The Sylvers) & Dick Griffey of Solar Records based out of Los Angeles, CA. They had a string of hits, one of the biggest being "I've Just Begun To Love You" which got a ton radio at the time.

This is the British born Linda Carriere who sang lead on Loose End's "Don't Be a Fool". She had the cutest afro then. She almost unrecognisable with dread weave here. https://youtu.be/XqQYWUGNFyE
