Blues In The Night
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Dell McCoury)

Though the miles are between us
I thought our love would strengthen
As it has so many times before
But something has happened
I can see it in your eyes
I can feel my world is crumblin'
And the blues are at my door

The last letter that you wrote was
On a blue piece of paper
That old feelin's back
The clouds are movin' in

The beginning of the end is near
I feel your love has faded into darkness
It seems I have no friend
I feel the blues movin' in

Oh it's not the words you wrote that made me sad
And broken-hearted
That's put me in this sad shape I'm in
Between the lines are mixed emotions
And there's teardrops on the paper
You said that's all I'll write today
I'll cose for now old friend

The last letter that you wrote was
On a blue piece of paper
That old feelin's back
The clouds are movin' in

My state of mind is desperate
And this hole that I'm sinkin' in
Gets deeper while I'm diggin' to get out
Oh please give the right answer to the questions I'm askin'
Tell me you still love me
That would turn my world about

The last letter that you wrote was
On a blue piece of paper

That old feelin's back
The clouds are movin' in

Overall Meaning

The song "Blues In The Night" by Linda Ronstadt, with Dell McCoury performing the vocals in this particular version, is a melancholic ballad about a deteriorating love affair. The first verse already sets the tone for the heartache that is to follow, as McCoury laments the miles between them and how an otherwise strong love felt betrayed by something that has yet to be explained. The second verse takes a more tangible approach and introduces what has caused his impending doom: a letter written on a blue piece of paper, a color connoting sorrow and sadness. McCoury sifts through the lines, looking for clues on why his lover has retreated from him and why the words and the tone have caused him so much pain.

Still listening in 2024 to this beautiful and timeless song!

I was the video recording engineer for this concert at the Atlanta Civic Center in 1977. After the show, Linda and her band knocked on the door (!) of my little tape truck and asked if they could watch the tape, so they and I sat together and watched the show. Linda is so unassuming and such a beautiful person. I remember talking to Don Grolnick, the piano player, who played the show with a broken hand. It was a great show, and a great memory for me, but I never thought this recording would live on 40+ years later.

I had a Crush on Linda in the 70's. Ironically, I was watching Roy Orbison when this came up. Played Roy & Linda for my Wife and she understood my THEN Crush...

Here in Tucson, client tells me he was a plumber 1980 and was at a house doing his thing and the lady of the house says "Oh, you like my daughters music" he was singing along to music in the background. Was Linda's mother and he was blown away, He has since passed away. Personally saw her in early 1980's in concert. What a special moment.
