Burning in the Skies
Linkin Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used the dead wood to make the fire rise
The blood of innocence burning in the skies
I filled my cup with the rising of the sea
And poured it out in an ocean of debris

Oh, I'm swimming in the smoke
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
What I don't deserve

We held our breathe when the clouds began to form
But you were lost in the beating of the storm
And in the end, we were made to be apart
In separate chambers of the human heart

Oh, I'm swimming in the smoke
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
It's in the blackened bones
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
What I don't deserve

I'm swimming in the smoke
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
The blame is mine alone
For bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
What I don't deserve
What I don't deserve, oh-whoa
What I don't deserve

I used the dead wood to make the fire rise
The blood of innocence burning in the skies

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Linkin Park's song "Burning in the Skies" capture a sense of regret and self-blame. The opening lines speak of using dead wood to start a fire, evoking the idea of destruction and burning bridges. The singer then goes on to reference the "blood of innocence burning in the skies," suggesting a deep sense of guilt and remorse. The second verse goes on to describe the feelings of being lost in a storm, and the sense of separation created in the aftermath.

Overall, the song seems to be exploring the idea of taking responsibility for one's actions and facing the consequences of them, even if it means losing something important. The repeated phrase "I'm losing what I don't deserve" emphasizes this sense of personal accountability and the idea that sometimes, when we burn bridges or make mistakes, we have to accept the losses that come with them.

One interpretation of this song is that it may be about lead singer Chester Bennington's personal struggles with addiction and mental health issues. Linkin Park has often explored themes of pain and loss in their music, and many of their songs are deeply personal in nature. Whatever the inspiration behind the lyrics, this song is a powerful testament to the human experience of making mistakes and trying to move forward from them.
