What Did I Do to You
Lisa Stansfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the way you walk, and the way you talk
Now you're nothing near the way that you were
And there's something strange when you hold my hand
Tell my why you changed the way that we were
Tell my why you changed the way that we were

Could we be the same, could we try again
[Chorus]
What did I do to you, baby?
What did I do to you, baby?
What did I do to you, what did I do to you?
What did I do to you, baby?

You never touch my skin, in the way you did
And you even changed the way you kiss me
When lovers part there's a change of heart
But my heart can't change the way that we were
Oh no, my heart can't change the way that we were

Could we be the same, could we try again

[Chorus]

Togetherness is when I undress
Never when we talk, never tenderness
And I can't forget all the joy we had
But I know we'll be the way we were
Yes, I know we'll be the way we were

Could we be the same, could we try again

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lisa Stansfield's song, What Did I Do to You, speak of a fading love between two people. The singer notices changes in the way her partner walks, talks, holds her hand, touches her skin, and even kisses her. She asks the question, "What did I do to you?" as she agonizes over the transformation in their relationship. She knows that lovers part and hearts change, but she wishes that they could be the same and try again.

The second verse emphasizes the lack of togetherness in their relationship. The once intimate moments of undressing have become devoid of tenderness or conversation. Despite the changes, the singer holds onto memories of the joy they had together and hopes that they can return to the way they were before.

The lyrics convey feelings of confusion, hurt, and longing. The singer is struggling to understand why her partner has changed and is pained by the loss of their once-close relationship. She holds onto the hope that they can start again and recapture the love they once had.

Also still a badass dance song, even today in 2019.
Oddly enough, I get teary eyed even as I'm kicking the groove, because it reminds me of relationships that have ended, and hearts that have been broken along the way...well mine, anyway.
Bittersweet song for me because of that.
Sadness and pain at the relationships that ended.
But pumping adrenaline because it's still a kick-ass dance track.☺

I know what you mean. Some of the best music is downbeat lyrics mixed with uplifting grooves. An interesting juxtaposition. Elvis Costello did this a lot.
