After a return to college to focus on her studies, Hesketh along with two of her fellow students formed the electronic/indie pop band Dead Disco in 2005. The band had limited releases of their four singles but due to increasingly different ideas about the band's musical direction, Hesketh left to pursue a solo career. Hesketh has cited as influences The Human League, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, and Jean-Michel Jarre.
Hesketh began writing her own songs and posting covers on the social networking sites such as YouTube and MySpace. After appearing on several shows including Later... with Jools Holland and Last Call with Carson Daly, Hesketh entered production on her debut album. With increasing media attention regarding her then-yet-to-be-released debut album, Hesketh topped the BBC Sound of 2009 poll and received a BRIT Critics Choice nomination. She has been linked to a wave of breakthrough female artists in their twenties playing 1980s-influenced music, including Lady Gaga, Ladyhawke, Florence and the Machine, and Elly Jackson of La Roux.
Her debut album, Hands, was released on 8 June 2009 on 679 Recordings and Atlantic Records to generally positive reviews. The album peaked at number five on the UK Albums Chart and at number twenty on the Irish Albums Chart. Hands included a collaboration with Phil Oakey from The Human League on the song "Symmetry". The first single off the album "New in Town" became a top twenty hit, while the next single "Remedy", produced by RedOne, reached the top ten. She has also released the EP Illuminations in the United States.
Little Boots' second album, Nocturnes, was released on 5 May 2013 on her own label On Repeat.

I'm speaking but you do not hear a word
Glaze over colder than a lake
Frozen by our distances of late
It's clear as glass you smash
My apparitions melt before your eyes
My skull is full of dreams and nothing's as it seems
Do you even know that I'm here? I might as well be a ghost
It's true, you walk right through me
Look in the mirror and you, you see nothing but yourself
It's true, I see right through you
It's true, you walk right through me
It's true, I see right through you
Blank pages surrounding your eyes
Overthrow the colors in your mind
Science has always been a liar
I can see you shiver in my fire
I'm falling like a snowflake
Catch me quick before I disappear
I'm fading like the sun
And soon as I'm gone everything will come undone
Do you even know that I'm here? I might as well be a ghost
It's true, you walk right through me
Look in the mirror and you, you see nothing but yourself
It's true, I see right through you
Do you even know that I'm here? I might as well be a ghost
It's true, you walk right through me
Look in the mirror and you, you see nothing but yourself
It's true, I see right through you
It's true, you walk right through me
It's true, I see right through you
It's true, you walk right through me
It's true, I see right through you
It's true, you walk right through me
It's true, I see right through you
It's true, you walk right through me
It's true, I see right through you
The lyrics of Little Boots's song Ghost seem to talk about a relationship that is slowly falling apart, with one of the partners withdrawing into an "other world." The singer is desperately trying to communicate, but the other person doesn't seem to be listening or responding, showing no emotion or feeling, and staying distant. The phrase "glaze over colder than a lake" creates a picture of someone who is frozen and unresponsive. The lines "My skull is full of dreams, and nothing's as it seems" suggest that the singer is living in a different reality or fantasy, while the other person seems to be living in their own world oblivious to the relationship's issues.
The chorus is where the singer reveals the true nature of her pain. She says that she feels as if she might as well be a ghost, that the other person doesn't even acknowledge her presence. They are walking through her as if she is not there. When she says, "look in the mirror and you see nothing but yourself," it is as if she is conveying a message to the other person that they are entirely self-centered, only focused on their needs and desires, completely ignoring the fact that the relationship is suffering, and the singer is hurt.
This song is an excellent example of how straightforward lyrics can convey deep emotions and meaning. There is a sense of isolation, abandonment, and despair that the singer feels, which is amplified by the eerie music and the haunting melody. Despite this, the song concludes on a hopeful note, where the singer pleads for the other person to "catch her quick before she disappears." She is fading like a snowflake, slow and steady, and without their intervention, everything might come undone.
