Itsy Bitsy Spider
Little Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Itsy bitsy spider
went up the water spout
down came the rain
and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and
dried up all the rain
and the Itsy bitsy spider
went up the spout again.
Itsy bitsy spider
went up the water spout
down came the rain
and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and
dried up all the rain
and the Itsy bitsy spider
went up the spout again
(musical interlude)
Itsy bitsy spider
went up the water spout
down came the rain
and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and
dried up all the rain
and the Itsy bitsy spider
went up the spout again
(musical interlude)
Itsy bitsy spider
went up the water spout
down came the rain
and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and
dried up all the rain
and the Itsy bitsy spider
(yo yo yo he did not try again!)
O but he did
(yo yo yo he did not try again!)
O but he did
(yo yo yo he did not try again!)
O but he did
(music)
(whisper 12 x) he tried, he tried
Itsy bitsy spider
who could be much finer?
He's just an itsy bitsy spider
he had to fight the rain
he knew it couldn't be the same

he finally got through
cause he knew just what to do.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Little Richard's song, "Itsy Bitsy Spider," tell a story of a small spider's adventure as it attempts to climb up a water spout. This is the history of ONE ALL-TIME CLASSIC, “Itsy Bitsy Spider”*…

Known as the “Incy Wincy Spider” in Australia and the UK, the song can be found in musical publications - including alternative versions - such as “Camp and Camino in Lower California” (1910), under the title “Spider Song,” where “itsy bitsy” is changed from “blooming bloody.”

Original lyrics from the “Spider Song” (1910) :

“Oh, the blooming, bloody spider went up the spider web
The blooming, bloody rain came down and washed the spider out
The blooming, bloody sun came out and dried up all the rain
And the blooming, bloody spider came up the web again”

Lyrics for “Itsy Bitsy Spider” :

“The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again”

In 1948, the nursery rhyme was published in the books “Western Folklore” and “American Folk Songs for Children.”

More recently, “Itsy Bitsy Spider” has been covered and sampled by the likes of CARLY SIMON, “Coming Around Again” album (1987), NICOLE KIDMAN, “Dead Calm” movie soundtrack (1989), LITTLE RICHARD, “For Our Children” Disney CD (1991), RAFFI, “Let’s Play” album (2002), to name just a few.

OH, and it was referenced in TWO SPIDER-MAN pictures in the 2000s, naturally‼️

Why is this piece so interesting? WELL, IT HIGHLIGHTS THE LIFECYCLE❕ Just as life has rises and falls, so does the spider… 💙🕷️💚

* The original author of the rhyme and melody is unknown.
