Vocalist/guitarist David Hidalgo and drummer Louie Pérez met at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, and bonded over their mutual affinity for obscure musical acts such as Fairport Convention, Randy Newman and Ry Cooder. Pérez recalls, "We’re looking at each other, 'You like this stuff? I thought I was the only weird one.' So I went over to his house one day for about a year, which we spent listening to records, playing guitars, and starting to write songs." The two borrowed reel-to-reel recorders from a friend and created multi-track recordings of music spanning from parody songs to free-form jazz. They later enlisted fellow students Cesar Rosas and Conrad Lozano to complete the group's line-up in 1973.
Formed in the late 1970's, band members Dave Hidalgo, Cesar Rojas, Steve Berlin, Louie Pérez and Conrad Lozano became the bellwether for Mexican-American music in the U.S. when they recorded the music for "La Bamba" in 1987, which added popular acclaim to the critical praise they had received for their 1984 album "How Will the Wolf Survive?".
They have since become one of the mainstays of the Latin music scene as well as rock music in general, staying together through over 20 albums, and for almost three decades, through changing music climate and personal tragedies, they've continued cranking out albums and touring to dedicated fans.

The lyrics to Los Lobos's song "Volver Volver" speak about a passionate love that has been lost and the strong desire to return to that love once again. The singer expresses the turmoil that they are feeling as they make their way towards a sort of madness, all due to the strong desire to return to their lost love. Although the pain of the situation is great, the singer knows that they must follow their heart and return to their loved one. The couple had left each other some time ago, but the singer realizes that their love was true and they must reconnect. The lyrics express the determination of the singer to lose everything just to find their way back to their loved one's arms once more.
The repetition of the phrase "volver, volver" (to return, to return) throughout the song emphasizes that the desire to return to the lost love is intense and all-consuming. The singer repeats this phrase over and over again to drive home the point that their love is so strong that they cannot live without it. The lyrics speak about the willingness to travel any distance and face any obstacle just to return to their loved one. The line "yo sé perder, yo sé perder" (I know how to lose, I know how to lose) suggests that the singer is willing to risk everything for love, even if it means sacrificing their own happiness.
Overall, Los Lobos's "Volver Volver" is a passionate plea for love and speaks to the depth of the human heart when it comes to matters of love and relationships.

Y volver volver, volver
A tus brazos, otra vez
Llegaré hasta donde estés
Yo sé perder, yo sé perder
Quiero volver, volver volver
Aaah ah ah ah ah
Y no vuleves porque no quieres, papacito
Nos dejamos hace tiempo
Pero me llegó el momento
De perder
Tú tenías mucha razón
Le hago caso al corazón
Y me muero por volver
Y volver volver, volver
A tus brazos otra vez
Llegaré hasta donde estés
Yo sé perder, yo sé perder
Quiero volver, volver volver

I cry when I listen to some of the songs on the "Just Another Band from East L.A." album. It's the way they are able to bring two or three generations together in their songs.
