Autumn Leaves
Lou Rawls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The song Autumn Leaves by Lou Rawls is a poignant reflection of love and loss in the midst of autumn's changing landscape. The first verse describes the beauty of the falling leaves as they drift by the window, a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life and relationships. The leaves' colors of red and gold evoke the warmth of summer, contrasting with the reality of the upcoming cold and darkness of winter. The singer remembers his lover's lips and their summer kisses, but they are now distant memories. He misses her most during this season, as the leaves represent the change and loss that he feels.

The second part of the song is in French and speaks to the universal theme of separation and heartbreak. The singer reflects on the love he shared with his partner, but acknowledges that life can separate even the closest of couples. He uses the image of the sea erasing the footsteps of lovers on the sand to emphasize that time moves on and memories fade.

Overall, the song is a bittersweet reflection of the transience of love and the seasons of life. It captures the emotions of nostalgia, longing, and acceptance, all at once.

This here is uniquely LOU RAWLS!!! I love his spin on this old classic. This man had such an awesome voice. My mother played all of his music when I was a child, so I know them. As an adult, I appreciate them in a different way. I hear the music differently and I listen to the lyrics, the singer's voice, inflections, the musicians, etc. GREAT MUSIC!!!!!!
