On a Clear Day
Lou Rawls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a clear day, rise and look around you
And you'll see who you are
On a clear day how it will astound you
That the glow of your being outshines every star

You'll feel part of every mountain, sea, and shore
You can hear from far and near a world you've never heard before
And on a clear day, on that clear day
You can see forever and ever more

You can hear from far and near a world you've never heard before

And on that clear day, on that clear day
You can see forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and evermore!

Overall Meaning

The song "On a Clear Day" by Lou Rawls is all about the power of a clear mind and the immense opportunities it brings. The first verse encourages the listener to rise and look around themselves. The clear day acts as a metaphor for the times in our lives when our minds are unobstructed, allowing us to see things more clearly. The line "you'll see who you are" suggests that it's only in those moments that we can truly understand ourselves. The second line of this verse proposes that the realisation of one's own greatness can be surprising and cause awe, just like seeing the glow of your being outshining every star.

The second verse emphasizes the connectedness and unity we feel with nature, represented by the mountains, sea, and shore. With clarity, we are able to hear sounds that we never noticed before. This experience allows us to broaden our perspectives on the world and hear beyond our own bubble. The repetition of "on that clear day" in the final verse emphasizes how long lasting and memorable these moments of clarity can be. The final line connotes that the possibilities and opportunities that become visible to us are endless and that we can dream as far as we want.

In essence, the song can be interpreted as an invitation to self-awareness and discovery. It urges the listener to take a moment and clear their mind, listen to the world around them, and let their true self shine through.

Thank you for posting this song of Lou's! It would be absolutely wonderful to hear his 'Soulin' Album w/ his monologues (and this version of 'Clear Day'). No one can do it better than Lou. No one.

Thank you for posting my favorite Lou Rawls vocal performance!

Thank you for this post. Lou was a huge piece of my childhood because he was one of my dad's favorite guys. The olde I got, the more I appreciated how Lou represented a level of talent and prefessionalism that would look pretty foreign today. Lou had skills AND style.

Love this song right here.

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise, dwell on these things.
