Could You? Would You?
Lower Than Atlantis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's another scrubber
You are miserable, and I'm sure it's not my place
But your new girlfriend's not to my taste
Would you tell her there's no other
Introduce her to your mother
If you can't then don't say so
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!
She ain't bothered
Sleazy lover under the covers
You are miserable, and I'm sure it's not my place
But your new girlfriend's not to my taste
Would you tell her there's no other
Introduce her to your mother
Could you trust her with your pin number
If you can't then don't say so
Woah! Woah! Woah! Woah!
Would you tell her there's no other
Introduce her to your mother
Could you trust her with your pin number
If you can't then don't say so
The lyrics of Lower Than Atlantis's song Could You? Would You? criticize the singer's choice of partner. The song suggests that he claims to love his girlfriend but does not actually love her, and that she is a promiscuous person. The singer of the song is aware of the singer's unhappiness and states that it's not his place to comment on his relationship but doesn't like his girlfriend. The chorus poses some valid questions, challenging the singer to question his commitment to his girlfriend. The lines "Would you tell her there's no other, Introduce her to your mother, Could you trust her with your pin number" urge the singer to re-evaluate his feelings and whether he sees a future with this person or not. The repetition of these lines in the chorus emphasizes the importance of these questions, and the urgency of seeking answers to them.
The song's tone is judgmental, and the lyrics symbolize a view of society that sees women who are sexually open as lesser or unworthy of love or respect. The chorus draws attention to the trustworthiness and loyalty of the singer's girlfriend. The metaphorical reference to a pin number to establish trustworthiness and honesty speaks volumes about the singers' priorities in the relationship. In essence, the song tries to convince the singer to break up with his girlfriend and find someone who is a better match.

I always saw this more as being a case of if you don't trust her/can't include her in your life fully, then don't lie and tell her you love her. If she's just another girl then treat her as such, rather than messing with her. That's what I love about this song: the truth of it.

isn't it "Your new girlfriend's not to my taste."
