No Belts
Lower Than Atlantis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No belts to hold up our jeans and the knees are worn
But we're still alright, still going out tonight
This van is falling apart
I hope we make it to the show before our set starts
We get to play every day, it's our dream and we're stoked
We don't have jobs and we don't want them
No, we won't stay at home
We've got debt up to our eyeballs and we won't be told
The game we play, is a dangerous game
We're playing our lives away
We won't be told
what to do, we'll live on our own terms
We'll take every opportunity, we'll never let it burn
We'll never give up, we'll fight until the end
We'll keep playing our music, even if we have to mend
Our broken equipment, or go without
We won't stop until we've figured it all out
No Belts is a song by Lower Than Atlantis, a British rock band, that was released in 2011 as part of their second album, "World Record". The song, like many others in the album, talks about the journey of a struggling and impoverished musician trying to make it in the industry. The lyrics paint a picture of a band that is physically and financially worn out but still has the determination to persevere. It's a song that celebrates the joys and hardships of living out one's dreams, even when there seem to be impossible odds against achieving them.
One of the key themes in the song is the idea of living life on one's own terms. The band expresses a strong aversion towards the idea of conventional life that involves getting a regular job and settling down. They choose instead to pursue their dreams relentlessly and take every opportunity to play their music, even if it means they have to live with broken equipment or play in run-down venues. The song suggests that the band is fully committed to the dangerous game that they've chosen to play, and that they are willing to play their lives away if it means they get to do what they love.
Another interesting aspect of the song is that it doesn't idealize the life of a struggling musician as something glamorous or desirable. Instead, it provides a realistic portrayal of the challenges and hardships that come with living such a life. The band members are shown to be physically worn out with scuffed shoes and torn shirts, and their van is falling apart. They have no money in the bank and are deeply in debt, yet they're still willing to do whatever it takes to keep playing their music.
