Slow Dancing

My hands won't stop shaking and that can't be good
I would forget you if only I could
Think about anything else
Slow dance at the end of the night
Everyone's looking who cares if it's right
Your head on my chest I held you so tight
Our feet were too drunk to keep step in time
But we held fast and we made it just fine
Hell you smiled a lot you smile a lot
Chairs on the tables they're mopping the floors
We were still dancing just like before
You held me tight you held me tight
The light from the disco ball surrounds us with stars
And I looked like trouble right from the start
You told me so hell you told me so
Smoking the cigarettes more than I should
My hands won't stop shaking and that can't be good
I would forget you if only I could
Think about anything else
And that slow dance didn't last very long
So now I guess I'll be moving on
But it was nice
God damn it was nice
The lyrics to Lucero’s song “Slow Dancing” tell the story of a night spent with someone trying to forget their past. The singer is smoking cigarettes to numb their emotions but their hands are still shaking. They’re trying to forget their companion, wishing they could think about anything else. However, towards the end of the night, the two slow dance together, not caring about what anyone else thinks. Even though their feet are too drunk to keep up with the beat, they hold fast and make it through the dance. The light from the disco ball makes them feel as though they’re surrounded by stars, and despite knowing that the slow dance didn’t last very long, the singer knows it was a nice moment in time.
The overall message of the song seems to be about escapism. The singer is trying to distract themselves from their pain and in the process, ends up having a moment of connection with someone else. They’re fully aware that the moment won’t last forever, and they’ll soon have to move on, but they’re content with having had the experience. The slow dance is almost a metaphor for life – it’s fleeting, but it’s the connections we make with others that give it meaning.

I'm not even mad at the younger crowd, that ended up here because of the unfortunate passing of Mitch Lucker. This is a great band that more people should be listening to, not matter what the reason. R.I.P.
