Where We Belong
Luciana Zogbi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were tough, we were rough
We could never say we had enough
No pain, no chain could ever hold us back
We were free like the sea
Like we were always meant to be
Not a single worry on our minds
If we could go back in time
Would you try to change what went wrong
Or would you say it's naive to try
We always end up where we belong

Where we belong
Where we belong
Where we belong

We could feel it was real
We tasted warm blood on cold steel
And toasted to life with death herself
We were thieves, we were saints
We were animals no one could tame
Moving mountains with our manic minds
If we could go back in time
Would you try to change what went wrong
Or would you say it's naive to try
We always end up where we belong

Where we belong
Where we belong
Where we belong

Fate is not immune to time
Free will is a lie If we could go back in time
Why do we end up where we belong?

Where we belong

Where we belong
Where we belong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Luciana Zogbi's song "Where We Belong" appear to be talking about the freedom and wildness of youth, where the individuals involved were able to be tough, rough, and unencumbered by chains or pain. The lyrics speak of how they were like the sea, free and without worries, indulging in their wild and untamed nature. The songwriter implores the listener to ask themselves if they would change anything about their past if they were given the chance to go back in time – in essence, asking them if they would attempt to rewrite their personal history, or accept that they were always meant to end up where they are.

On the surface, the song seems like a celebratory ode to the recklessness of youth, but it also seems to be questioning the very existence of free will. The bridge talks about fate and time, and how free will is nothing but an illusion. The final line of the song, "why do we end up where we belong?" can be interpreted in various ways - either as a statement of acceptance or fatalism, or as a rhetorical question - hinting that there might be an unknown force at work that inevitably determines where we end up in life.

Overall, "Where We Belong" is a song that celebrates the wildness and freedom of youth, while also ruminating on the nature of destiny, fate and free will. Through its lyrical journey, the song explores the idea of accepting one's past and present, and embracing the inevitability of life's path.

There are those who think that life
Has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance
A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign
Blame is better to give than receive
You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will
There are those who think that
They've been dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in Lotus-Land
All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate
You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will
Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt
That's far too fleet
You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will

Luciana, I watched this music video about 5 times and I can finally say I fully get the meaning - and its deep. It’s about questioning your place in society and breaking free from the shackles of social expectations. You portrayed this with 3 different characters. The old woman practicing fencing (a typically male sport). The native american graduating (embracing western lifestyle). And the garbage picker man studying mathematics. (Breaking the stereotype that poor=dumb). All of this ties perfectly with the lyrics “If we could go back in time, would you try to change what went wrong, or would you say it’s naive to try, we always end up where we belong ?”. That verse invites the listener to question how much free will do we actually have in deciding out life path. How much is decided for us? And that part where you sang “Free will is a lie”... omg... I could go on forever this song is deeper than the damn ocean.
