Titanic
Lucio Dalla & Francesco De Gregori Lyrics

Sior Capitano mi stia a sentire
Ho belle e pronte le mille lire
In prima classe voglio viaggiare
E gira gira, gira gira l'elica
Trasmetteva saluti e speranze
Per questa crociera straordinaria
E riceveva messaggi d'auguri
The song "Titanic" by Lucio Dalla & Francesco De Gregori tells the story of the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic through the eyes of different passengers from different classes on the ship. The first verse contrasts the cost of the different classes, with first-class being expensive, second-class being cheaper, and third-class being unbearable with unpleasant smells and discomfort. However, the singer pleads with the captain to let them travel in first-class with their 15-year-old daughter, hoping to dine with the rich and listen to the American rhythms played by the ship's orchestra.
The second verse focuses on the perspective of the third-class passengers, who argue that they are treated like gentlemen on the ship despite being called "cafoni" (uncouth people) in their daily lives. They appreciate the comfort of their cabins, and the fact that even though the ship is as dark as oil, they can still see the beauty in the moonlight. As the ship continues to sail, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, including the girl from first-class who falls in love with her own hat and sees it dancing at night, and the marconist who gets messages of hope from all over the world. The song ends with the chorus sung by the first-class girls who sarcastically express their joy at moving to America to avoid marriage, while the reality of what is to come looms ahead.
Overall, the song "Titanic" reflects the social stratification of the passengers aboard the ship and the despair they face as they face the sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic.
