"Luscious, luminous, lilting lullabies" is how the New York Times describes songs by Lucius, a five-piece band from Brooklyn, NY.
At the center of Lucius are the "alluring and magnetic" (Seventeen) singers-in-unison, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig. After graduating from Boston’s Berklee School of Music, the two young friends and collaborators moved into an old Victorian house in Brooklyn’s Ditmas Park – a former recording studio and music school. The four-story musical fortress, rife with left-behind musical treasures, housed many musician friends including, eventually, Wolfe and Laessig’s future bandmates, Danny Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri.
“When we were ready to make our record we felt it was imperative it reflected the synergy that Holly and I feel so strongly in our personal and musical relationship,” said Wolfe. The resulting songs are stories told from the same perspective, sung at the same time, with the same sentiment; two voices as one.
The quintet’s self-titled debut EP was recorded and produced in the Ditmas Park house where the band was formed. Their full length album is due for release Autumn 2013.

Stuffed with extra baggage
Lay me down to shut my eyes
Beaded gazes
Lead you nowhere anyways
Press on my heart, I will say
Press on my heart I will say
With a static smile
I think my stitching's coming loose
I'm hard headed,
But completely soft inside
I'm all wound up and still
The only thing that I can say is
I don't need you anyway
I don't need you, go home
Go home
I don't need you anyway
I don't need you, go home
Go home
I'm your dolly
Stuffed with extra baggage
Lay me down to shut my eyes
Beaded gazes
Lead you nowhere anyways
Press on my heart, I will say
Press on my heart I will say
I don't need you anyway
I don't need you, go home
Go home
I don't need you anyway
I don't need you, go home
Go home
Go home
Go home

Go home
The lyrics of Lucius's song Go Home seem to express feelings of loneliness and a desire for independence. The singer of the song is described as a "dolly," an object that is meant to be played with and manipulated. This suggests a lack of agency and control in the singer's life. They feel weighed down by "extra baggage," perhaps emotional baggage or past traumas. The line "lay me down to shut my eyes" could be interpreted as a desire to escape from the harsh realities of life, to shut out the world and retreat into oneself.
The second verse reinforces the idea of the singer's vulnerability, with the line "I think my stitching's coming loose." This could be interpreted literally as a reference to the singer's seams, or metaphorically as a reference to their mental or emotional state. The line "I'm hard-headed, but completely soft inside" suggests a dichotomy between the singer's outward appearance and inner feelings. Despite being tough on the outside, they are fragile on the inside. The repeated refrain of "I don't need you anyway, go home" could be a declaration of independence and self-reliance, or it could be a defense mechanism to keep people at a distance.
Overall, the lyrics of Go Home paint a picture of someone who is struggling with their emotions and sense of self. The repeated refrain of "go home" suggests a desire to be alone and to have control over one's own life. The use of the word "dolly" reinforces the idea of being manipulated by others and lacking agency. However, there is also a sense of strength in the singer's ability to tell people to go home and assert their independence.
