Slav To the Rhythm
Luke Buda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My favourite television show

I wanna see you on it

Moving all your skin and bones til you look robotic

Bionic
But you got up in a spin again

Scratching at your pretty skin

Drinking all your mother's gin

Til you vomit

And it makes me blind

And it makes me blind

I see you on a TV show

And I know you want it

Cause there's nothing in the way you move that looks ironic

Don't. Blow. Up.

Don't. Grow. Up.

Don't. Throw. Up.

Just. Keep. It up.

But you're losing all your friends again

Blowing all your chances then

No one can remember when

It was you they wanted

Makes me blind.

It really makes me blind.

I see you on a TV show

And I know you want it

Cause there's nothing in the way you move that looks ironic

Don't. Blow. Up.

Don't. Grow. Up.

Don't. Throw. Up.

Just. Keep. It up.

Overall Meaning

In "Slav to the Rhythm," Luke Buda speaks about his favorite television show and his love for watching people dance like robots. He desires to see the person he is addressing on the show, moving their "skin and bones" to look like a machine. However, the person he is speaking to seems to have gotten into a cycle of drinking and throwing up, which is causing them to lose friends and miss opportunities. Despite all of their struggles, Buda implores them not to give up, grow up, or throw up but to keep pushing forward.

The lyrics of the song could be interpreted in different ways, but overall, it seems like a cautionary tale about the dangers of living life in a self-destructive cycle. The person he is speaking to seems to have a desire to be famous and is willing to do anything to get on television, even if it means sacrificing their health.

The repetition of the lines "Don't. Blow. Up. Don't. Grow. Up. Don't. Throw. Up. Just. Keep. It up." could be seen as a mantra or a reminder to stay on track and not lose sight of what's important.
