Nathan Barlowe has been writing songs and playing in bands since the age of 14. He moved to Nashville to pursue a music career and immediately began to make his mark on the music scene. After graduating high school his younger brother Cary made the move to Nashville to join Luna Halo. "I taught him 4 chords before I left, and 2 years later I couldn't believe how good he was. There was no choice...he had to be in my band", says Nathan.
After adding a rhythm section, the band would enter into what would be years of writing, recording, and touring which saw them play hundreds of shows, to thousands of people in 10 countries. This period would bring about a developmental deal with Dreamworks Records which soon folded , an ill fated deal with Interscope, a stint at Warner Brothers, before finally being signed by Rick Rubin to his American Recordings label (Black Crowes, Slayer, Jonny Cash). In the fall of 2007 the self titled "LUNA HALO" (American/Columbia), was released to critical acclaim. Produced by Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan), and executive produced by Rick Rubin himself, Luna Halo had crafted an Alternative/Pop record full of memorable songs.
These songs would go on to be covered by country sensation Taylor Swift, and used by numerous film and television shows including The Hills, The O.C., American Idol, Ghost Whisperer, American Teen, as well as being the theme song for the NHL playoffs and the hit TV series The King of Queens.
As the band forges ahead while navigating the ever changing ebb and flow of the ocean that is the music industry, there is a new sense of urgency and commitment. They have recently added drummer Jonathan Smith, a long time friend and session drummer, and Swedish import Victor Broden on bass. Both have done extensive touring and are bringing raw energy and passion to the Luna Halo sound.
In the Summer of 2009 they will release a series of 3 EP's that will begin a new era in the way music is recorded and released. "We just want to be able to get the music to the fans in a faster and more direct way. It's our goal to have a constant stream of new music coming out", says Nathan.
With a new approach, and the defiant, never give up attitude that has come to define this band. Luna Halo will be making their mark for years to come.
Wait for You
Luna Halo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like there's something underneath
Locked in these chains
How I ache to be free
Dancing shadows
Call me closer
But still I'm waiting
Until the earth reverses
Until my eyes can see the wind
I'll wait for you
I've been sleeping
It seems
Most of my life
Black and white dreams
Stealing
What's meant for my eyes
Cold like winter
Frozen silence But I'm still waiting
The lyrics to Luna Halo's song "Wait for You" explore a feeling of entrapment and a longing for freedom. The opening lines set the stage for this theme, as the singer's skin feels strange, locked in chains as they ache to be free. This is contrasted with the allure of the dancing shadows, which call the singer closer despite their confinement. The refrain drives home the message of waiting for liberation, with intense imagery of the sun standing still, the earth reversing, and the eyes seeing the wind - all impossible events that emphasize the depth of the singer's commitment to their waiting.
The second verse deepens the sense of ennui and frustration, as the singer laments a life spent mostly sleeping and dreams that steal what's meant for their waking eyes. The imagery here is striking - black and white dreams suggest a lack of vibrancy and color in life, while the idea of stolen vision emphasizes a sense of powerlessness. The final lines "Cold like winter/Frozen silence" bring us back to the notion of being trapped, echoing the feelings of chains and confinement from the first verse. Throughout the song, there is a sense of urgency tempered with resignation - although the singer is waiting for something that may never come, they continue to hope and dream, holding onto the possibility of freedom.
