Lura was born in Portugal to Cape-Verdean parents in 1975. Her father came from Santiago and her mother from São Nicolau. Initially she wanted to become a dancer or a swimming instructor. She became a singer at the age of seventeen when Juka, an artist from São Tomé and Príncipe, asked her to sing a duet with him for a music album. The album became a success, and subsequently she participated in productions by artists such as Bonga, Tito Paris, Paulo Flores and Paulinho Vieira.
In 1996 she recorded her first album Nha Vida with her own compositions. In 1997 she participated in the AIDS awareness project Red Hot + Lisbon among famous artists such as Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Djavan, Bonga and Teresa Salgueiro. Further album productions and concerts all over Europe followed. In 2007 she sang her song Morna in the film Fados by Spanish film director Carlos Saura.

La na casa di Nha Kumpadri
Bádju finkadu
Ku gaita ku tudu kusa
Ku rafogadus na kuzinha di sê mudjer
Olê olê lê lê
Oi mi-m tem ki bai
Oh lê lê lê
Nu ka pode falta
Mi so di pensa
Na sabura ki nu sta bem passa
Fadiga dja da-m
Ku gana pa dia tchiga
Festa di Nha Kumpadri ê fogadu
Ku rafogados na kuzinha di sê mudjer
The song "Festa Di Nha Kumpadri" by Lura depicts a lively party on a Saturday night at the house of a friend named Nha Kumpadri. The atmosphere is charged with excitement as people dance to the sound of the "gaita", a traditional Cape Verdean instrument. The party is a grand reception that includes the guests being served food in the kitchen by the hostess.
The lyrics reflect the joy and energy that are characteristic of Cape Verdean culture. The song celebrates the sense of community and the importance of coming together to celebrate and enjoy life. It is also a homage to the women who work hard to prepare such festivities, as they are the ones who keep the cultural traditions alive.
Overall, the song is a representation of the vibrant spirit and social nature of Cape Verdean society, where music and dance are at the core of their cultural heritage.
