Open Up
Lydon John Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Burn, burn
You lied, you faked
You cheated, you changed the stakes
Magnet toss that pie in the sky
Unrehearsed, let the bubbles burst
All in all, a dreaming circus
Tragedy or comedy
Probably publicity
Open up, make room for me
Now open up, make room for me
Open up, make room for me
Now open up, make room for me
Lydon John's song Open Up is a powerful and insightful commentary on the entertainment industry and the way it manipulates and distorts reality. The repeated refrain of "Burn, burn," serves as a pointed indictment of the way that people in the industry deceive and betray each other in order to get ahead. This sense of betrayal is echoed in the first verse, which describes someone who has lied, cheated, and changed the rules to suit their own purposes.
The second verse is a bit more abstract, but it continues to explore the dynamic of manipulation and deceit that permeates the entertainment industry. The image of a "dreaming circus" suggests that the whole enterprise is built on illusion and artifice, while the mention of fuel in the tea with parody suggests that even the most lighthearted or humorous elements are driven by underlying motives of profit and self-promotion. The final line, which points to the likelihood that all of this is just a form of publicity, reinforces the idea that everything in the entertainment industry is ultimately driven by commercial priorities.
Taken as a whole, "Open Up" is a powerful critique of the entertainment industry and the many ways in which it distorts and manipulates reality. Through its use of vivid imagery and pointed lyrics, the song captures the sense of betrayal and disillusionment that can come with working in this cutthroat and competitive industry.
