Jennings began singing at a young age in a Toledo church choir. He later joined a group called The Dotsons with two of his cousins and his older brother, Jay. The group separated in the early 1990s, and Jennings rediscovered music and started a music program at an Ohio prison where he was serving a ten-year sentence on an arson-related charge. He has cited Erykah Badu's 1997 album Baduizm as one of the reasons for his rediscovery. Jennings was released from prison in December 2002 and started to pursue a solo career in music. In January 2003, he performed in Harlem at the Showtime at The Apollo. The same year, he also independently released his first EP, What Is Love. To further pursue his career, Jennings moved to New York City where he performed at rapper Nelly's concert at Radio City Music Hall, at an NAACP convention where he performed an original song called "Thank God for the NAACP", and at the Cafeteria in Chelsea, Manhattan during the blackout on August 14. He signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album Lyfe 268-192 (268-192 was his inmate number) in August 2004. His first single was Stick Up Kid, which didn't see much sucess until after the album was released. The album featured his hit single "Must Be Nice". Jennings' second album The Phoenix was released in August 2006. The first single, "S.E.X.", feautures Jennings' protégé, singer LaLa Brown.

I don't even know why I keep tryin'
Man
I call you on the phone
You are never home
You say that you gone
Handling business
I hear that everyday
All I can do it pray
You not losing interest
It's hard
To know you got my heart
Two nights before the party
Every time you don't call
It's cool
But don't think I'm a fool
We all got things two do
But we make time four what we want
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Busy
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Busy
I let you do your thing
Not get in your way
And try not two complain
But it's like it's useless
'Cause you
Just take it as it's cool
To continuing you two do
Whatever like I'm stupid
I'm not
I just love you a lot
And I'm not gonna stop
I just need a little token
What for
To keep my heart on course
Or else I might be force two find love somewhere else
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Busy
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh
Hey oh oh oh oh

In the song "Busy" by Lyfe Jennings, the singer is expressing his frustration towards his partner who always seems to be busy. His partner is always away, handling business and not always available even though the singer wants to spend time with them. Jennings is left to feel neglected and is considering moving on if things do not improve soon. Throughout the song, Jennings repeats "Hey oh oh oh oh, busy" as a representation of the way his partner is always preoccupied and unavailable.
The lyrics in the song suggest that Lyfe Jennings is making an effort to be understanding and not interfere with his partner's busy schedule. However, this does not mean that he is content with the situation. He expresses his feelings of being neglected, and although his partner’s responses to his calls and texts are excuses, he is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. In the end, Jennings realizes that he has to let go of his partner if he continues to feel neglected and unimportant.
