April Pestana I had a vaginal birth, first child. I did not bleed heavily to leave a little blood trail on the floor as I went on about changing the sanitary pads. The first few hours I barely soaked the pad. It was more like streaks, as if I spilled cranberry juice on a white shirt. When I went home I barely even used any pads. It can surely be different for all women. Prior to pregnancy my periods were heavy flows so I was surprised I didn’t bleed as much. & yes the way this woman got up out of bed reminded me of the pain I felt just to sit or get up from laying down , even to sit on the toilet.

My husband did the same following the birth of our 2nd child via cesarean.
It didn't exactly end well, but we can laugh about it now. Paramedics ended up coming to get me after I'd ripped my stitches from laughing so hard. The EMTs got me while I was on the floor with my legs over the side of the tub.
That was 21½ years ago and we're still laughing and still going strong.

I agree all the way. I took a parenting and child development class in highschool, and of course we learned that being a mom is going to be hard, but we never learned about it in detail. Yup, I remember this. I remember being so afraid to pee for fear there was a tear I was going to irritate and then being scared to poop for fear of ripping myself open again. The most frightening thing about is was it all happened so fast. One day you’re not even thinking twice about normal bodily functions and the next day, everything seems to be out of order that even sneezing in scary. That’s something I wish someone would have told be about. The drastic changes your body goes through, albeit temporarily, is very frightening.

Oh Gosh the dreaded sneeze. I carried a pillow with me everywhere to brace my stomach with to cough, sneeze, or even sit down. Sliding off the bed was no simple task. And I refused to eat anything but baby food so it wouldn't hurt to poop. I go back 41 years but I still see my R,G,B, or Yellow Tupperware drinking cup on the sink just for that warm water rinse. Thankfully it was a small bathroom and the sink was next to the commode.

And why in the heck doesn't America have built in bidet's like other countries?

I have one attached to my toilet seat now, with a warm water feature. This is an add on. They aren't common in toilets in this country, unless you special order one, or better yet a separate bidet only commode. I find it quite useful just to keep fresh and clean after each toilet use. I mean really, we don't just smear dog poop off of our bare feet if we stepped in it, we'd be seeking out the nearest water source after wiping off the mess to complete the process. Right?

I'm an early retired pharmacist & there were ALWAYS pain meds available even way back in the mid 1800's...( Heroin was OTC until early 1920's era...so were ALOT of sedative/barbiturate sleeping meds, morphine & cocaine..which NO woman needs postpartum ). This ad made me tear up & I was unable to have children. Today with the made up "opioid epidemic" 🤬🤬(don't get me started ) women are lucky to go home now with 12 piss-ass weak Percocet after a vaginal birth..that's the one blessing of SOME c-sections...she might get a whopping 24 losey pills to take the edge off... This made me cry. My second son was born 4 weeks ago, and this was like watching my life played back to me. Her holding the door handle and towel rack just before getting up from the toilet is 100% ACCURATE. I had to hold them sitting down too. That pain even with prescribed pain pills is unreal. I wish I had seen some one go through post partum before having baby number 1. Then it would have taken the edge off the experience. Baby number 2 was still painful but I knew what to expect. Those first few weeks at home, a father/husband/guy your father don't like should pitch in. Give the mother time to rest and heal.

He learned some valuable skills and his truck purrs like a kitten now. Him and his younger brother are great kids; they're thoughtful, fair, and don't hesitate to lend a hand. The popular definition of "manly" out there is that a real man is some kind of aloof bully.. and it is just outright wrong. A real man is caring and attentive to his family, patient and loving, stable and a steadfast protector, and is never impaired with alcohol or drugs. A real man is a rock that is always there for his wife and children to rely on, no matter how tough it gets. I teach my boys how to be real men by showing them, and that included holding them, learning to change their diapers, feeding them like a pro, and rocking them to sleep when they were tiny. The tough-guy silliness is just bad for everyone involved. It leaves new mothers in a lurch, it has babies miss out on the love and attention they need from their fathers, and forces fathers to miss out on the most rewarding experiences of their lives.. It's high-time that counterproductive mindset goes by the wayside and we men break that chain of uninvolved fathers. That's why every woman should read, read, read-~~everything you can get your hands on-~~ before giving birth. Read about all aspects of the process. Before, during and after. Try to get your partner to read as much of it as they will. If they won't read it for their self, read it to them. Show them pictures. Look at all the pictures yourself. Ignorance is not bliss in the game of birth. Talk to other moms--find out what worked for them. They'll fill you in on all the dope. Give birth with a midwife if possible. They are so much more helpful with answering all your questions and helping with the postpartum issues.

Very real. It should be aired to give people a realistic view on what to expect.
That first step out of bed takes your breath away. I held my breath when I saw this.
1) Because of the pain EVERYWHERE when standing and your body can't move as you'd wish it to.
2) Your body had a chemical reaction to a babies cry so I bet her breasts were leaking and in painfully pulsating whilst her baby cried here.
3) The indescribable feeling of Everything INSIDE suddenly dropping with gravity because you've now got empty space where you were filled with another body and liquid. All pressured down into your sorest parts.
AND your sense of balance changes.
4) That extra lot of damage you weren't expecting after giving birth.... Nobody warns you about or how to heal it over a long period of time.

@@planetag310 The mesh undies are very stretchable. Bellies of all sizes can wear them. They make it easier on the mom and the nurse can check the episiotomy area. The large pads are necessary as there is a lot of discharge (blood) after birth. They left that part out of the commercial. The little pads she is using in the big pad are comforting for the hemorrhoids that often occur during labor.

Perhaps showing ads such as this may help curb teens from thinking having a baby is cute or easy! Ads such as this: showing real life & not falsehoods, could help to show what giving birth is really like! From my brother, paramedic who has been in on numerous deliveries: After the delivery I always had that nagging 'job left undone - half finished feeling. Mom's got her work cut out for her big time and she's just ran a marathon with a huge load of emotional and hormonal baggage. The medical world washes it's hands and strolls away. So anything that makes mom's jobs a little easier is alright in my book.

And as far as that commercial is concerned, we all came from a blood and body fluids mess and exhaustion along with emotional and physical trauma the order of the day. If you can't handle a reality that you were a part of, suck it up. It's you that has a problem - in coping with reality. GET OVER IT.

I would rather watch this than the commercials of people with half a face from smoking and having cancer, or half dead animals . They are important too but this is so helpful for women and their partners to understand that childbirth is not all sunshine and roses . Very impactful and interesting ad since I've seen nothing like it before. Strange how birth is so commonplace and considered general knowledge yet most people don't even think about the recovery process or have any knowledge of what it looks like. My wife is going to have our first child soon and I found this ad extremely helpful for preparing me to expect that she will be in a lot of pain so I'll need to work double time to assist. She will have a C-section so I imagine it will be even more difficult for her. You guys should make an ad about C-section recovery as well 👍

I had a c section and had to throw myself on the bed to lie down and hubby had to help me get out of bed because my ab muscles hurt so much. You'll have to check the incision to make sure it doesn't get infected.

The first night after giving birth, I was alone with my baby in the hospital... I REMEMBER BEING AFRAID OF MOVING... I WAs bleeding everywhere 🤣 and I had hemorrhoids... My baby couldn't get milk because I didn't have nipples... He pooped and I had to change him and I was in so much pain... I didn't wanna eat and drink because I was afraid of goin to the bathroom... I went to go to the bathroom for the first time after I gave birth and couldn't even stand up. With the drugs I had been given my legs were ok enough I could move them but still too numb to support me. I had to scream for help to get a nurse to pull me up and get me to the bathroom. No one ever told me that might happen.
I also remember the bed always being soaked because I was wearing pads that held crushed ice to help with the pain.

I'm sorry about the nurses. Sometimes we get so consumed in making sure they look right so there is no infection and worse pain later that we don't realize how hard we touch. Not saying we are smaking around, but everything is so sore that breathing hurts. I hope they weren't just unnecessarily rough with you or any one though.

Things I wasn't prepared for:

1) The pain involved in not being able to empty my bladder during labor. Not that I couldn't.... it's just that I was physically incapable. I had to have a catheter. This was never discussed. Nor was the fact that I would need 48 hours to regain continence.

2) Inverted Nipples. I read about them, and assumed that I didnt have them because they were not concave. This is a barrier to breast feeding that we had to overcome.

3) The next day, I felt like I had been in a car accident. Sore places I didn't expect to be. Like my arms and shoulders.

My goodness just flashback to a few months ago. Felt every second of this commercial. My recovery was so painful the second time around. I used to love watching award shows. Especially when the stars would walk down the red carpet! At this time in my life I’ve tuned out the noise of perfection that’s plastered all over these carpets. It can be very triggering to watch new actress moms “bounce back” so quickly to then have it blasted all over the magazines, news, and talk shows. Thank you for sharing real life! Watching this, I kept waiting for whatever part was too graphic or obscene and got it banned. I never found it. I thought the ad was very tastefully done and showed something that everybody needs to see. I've never had a child, but I've been around a lot of women who have. It's important for those of us in their support circles to know what they're going through. As a sister, a friend, an aunt, a coworker, I can't take away the pain, but I can help with housework, shopping, watching the kids, or just be there with a listening ear.

As raw as it appears, it's not anything I want to watch twice. Women do need to be educated about the "4th trimester", the more they're prepared, the better they'll be, but this should be part of the discharge documents, not a commercial for the kids and I to watch at dinner time.

Y’all are amazing for putting this out there. I’m pregnant now with my first child and I knew you had to wear a diaper and some ice but I didn’t know it was like this or any of the extra that comes with it. And now I am terrified but I feel better knowing about it instead of being blindsided. And I think you just made my future life a hell of a lot easier so THANK YOU.

You'll be okay. It's really rough honestly but you're already stronger than you realize. I literally cried every single day at about 5pm for the first 4 weeks or so because your hormones are all out of wack and you're just exhausted, in pain and are dying for a break. After about 6 weeks I started getting used to being tired all the time and I think the hormones finally leveled out. Take you're time with everything and ask for help whenever you can, as much as you just want to get back to yourself you need to give yourself the time to heal and adjust.

In the eyes of an Oscar organizer, this video simply just doesn’t relate to their whole theme of the event and content. It’s kind of out of place, although still important. Just saying people should be surprised that they didn’t air it.

I’m watching this with tears in my eyes, as I hold my little sleeping baby. My body was going through this not long ago, and you’re right, I felt so unprepared. I’m crying because this reminded me how incredible the female body is, how resilient all us women are.
Im ashamed that this would be banned. As a new mom I felt like I didn’t have a clue what to expect postpartum because it literally is never talked about... this needs to change. Now.

OMG! I remember being that mom! I remember going through that, the pain, the discomfort, trying to heal my body after such a traumatic situation. I think it stinks that this ad wasn't allowed to run during the Oscars. But what upsets me more is that everyone isn't talking about this topic more. We need to open up the conversation with moms about what to expect right after birth, not to scare them but to help them feel more prepared for the realities.

Forget academy awards! This should be shown in every country and every channel. Everyone should know what it looks like. We FINALLY have open talk about periods and no one lost their sanity over it. I hope more things like this make it to the public. This is WORTH sharing ❤️

So real. When I had my first son I didn’t even know to expect this and it was scary and hard to take care of myself and the pain and a newborn. This awareness needs to be shown! Props to you frida!

I’ve never felt so understood by a video. I felt so confused, alone and unprepared as a first time mom. No one explained these products, no one told me about having to get up and use the bathroom but it taking all of 20 min to do it. Getting woken up by a crying baby to have to go clean yourself up and then tend to a child. I wish I had seen this before I gave birth. I wish the father of my child would have seen this before I gave birth. If it wasn’t for my mom, and the nurses crash course on my new body, I don’t know what I would have done. I needed this. Thank you for making me feel like I wasn’t alone in my most vulnerable state.

We no longer have communities in US that prepare women for pregnancy, birth, or postpartum, so even product advertisements can serve as education. The information in this video is not openly talked about as we do not have support systems, and we are forced to get our information from media as our culture changes. We need information about this life event. Stop censoring life.

Bravo FridaMom!!! I totally remember that pain and discomfort and feeling like no one understood. I bet the people making the decisions are males who have no problem engaging and supporting what it takes to make a baby, but not what we go through to have it! Not that men are bad, but they are are oblivious and would prefer to keep it that way! Keep up the good work and the fight!

I'm snotty sobbing while watching this. It's so spot on. Childbirth is traumatic for many women, and the days, nights, weeks and sometimes months that follow don't get a whole lot better. Thank you for showing reality. Beautiful, miserable, life-changing reality.
