Great vid! My fav VGG so far! A guy loves to see the the more rare species of snow-gowers. Had a couple of Skiroules back in the day. 440 Ultra’s.....Sleek going to town machines in their day. Love to see some more like this, maybe a Deer or Massey even?

For wear rods, make your own. Use 3/8" steel round stock and weld a 3/8" stud to it using the old ones for a pattern or weld fresh 3/8 round stock to the old worn out rods. It will be taller and steer better. Heat it until cherry red and quench with oil. They will last much better than oem.

Hot rolled steel is the harder, unless u are going to spend the extra bucks for special heat treated! Was into that snowmobiling pretty heavy from 60’s to the 90’s or so. Great times were had by many thousands back till about 80’s in northern MN. I AM 83 now and still have three sleds, 91 wild Cat, 86 Polaris 600 Le Special modified. Yamaha Ovation 340 Air cooled, electric start. Post

This was pretty badass! Glad you brought it back, I love the idea of keepin' on stuff. Too many folks are just ready to toss perfectly good things right out in the dumpster. Not sure what the magneto produces for voltage, but you might consider putting one of those HID or LED bulbs in there so you can blind oncoming traffic into a lawsuit.

A tip for the windshield if you fold a piece of paper in half to make a templatee you can get it to be real nice and even. On the bottom you can tape over the ferring, then tape the template (still folded) at the middle and razor blade the bottom of your template off and you'll be selling custom new stock windshields for 69 snow skeeters in no time. Would be nice to keep the template around just in case someone decides the snowmobile looks good in a bush and breaks the windshield.

I hate to tell a guy what he probably already knows, but in another guy's experience starting small engines it just works much better when you pull it over to a TDC (or max resistance) before givin her a good yank. Could start my bike first kick almost every time. I know, two strokes aren't the same, they have a reed block and don't build compression the same way, but I did the same thing on the two strokes I rode and it seemed to help.

I live in southwestern NM (that's MN backwards :] ) & will likely never ride a snow machine, but I watched this episode all the way through & have no regrets for doing so. Always entertaining!! I love these older sleds...in the early 90s when my friends were running fancy things like Phazer IIs, I was still on my '78 Enticer 340 with a 440 swap...they were faster, but I way more maneuverable, could do wheelies, and pull myself out of a ditch without getting a hernia. I eventually upgraded to an '80 SS 440 (silver and blue), miss that one too...

This reminds me of my Dad's 1970 Johnson Skee-Horse 437 wide track. The seat flipped open to reveal a storage compartment. Always kept a few spare belts and some tools in it. It had quite the appetite for belts. The opposed twin did sound different from any other sled. It was good to hear one run again. Thank you!

I love it. I’m a huge fan of the older sleds, the new ones are just too darn fast for anything other than compensation for shortages in other areas. For just rippin’ around a pasture or down a wooded trail, 35 mph is plenty, and hey, the price is right, you know? I feel like the manufacturers completely lost sight of half their potential market, and if we look to Honda bringing back the old-style cub and monkey style bikes at a fantastic price point, I think Barbardier and Yamaha could really make a fast buck too.

I was the conveyor design guru at Pontiac motors in the '70s. From that experience, I know you can just buy wear-resistant steel from steel shops in many sizes, flat bars, and round. It is usually painted red to distinguish it from normal steel. Weld-on studs and you're done.

Great resto. I make my own ski runners for the old sleds using cold roll steel and weld a few bolts or all thread for studs. You can put some beads of weld on the bottom to act as a carbide.

Derek, 3 things: (1) It is great to see a young guy take the time and make the effort to bring something old back to life that a lot of folks around just scrap. (2) It’s sure nice to see the little Vice Grip out wrenching in the Garage with Dad; those memories will last a lifetime. (3) As far as the wear plates go, you could just fabricate your own OR you could take the old ones and build them up with the welder and grind them flat. It's funny but it's not funny. Back in the day I was racing go-karts and when I was doing an engine build, I would run all the engine parts through the dishwasher, it works awesome. I eventually ended up getting caught doing it and it didn't turn out well. The wife was quite unhappy with me.

As far as rails for the ski's go, back in the day when in high school we use to make our own in welding shop. Miss my old 71 arctic cat lynx, pulled a lot of fire wood from the bush with that old sled. It was an awesome sled, would go anywhere and everywhere.

I’m really happy that on the first start with its own tank and all, it started just like every other sled built before 2015. Just wouldn’t be right if it popped off every time.
