I was there on R&R from Iraq in 2003. I stayed at the Welkomme Inn on Soi 2 (looks like it's gone now), so the Central Marina was the go-to mall for me. Plus, I liked the prices at the Big-C.

Also, I went to Ripley's, the water park on Jomtiem(?) Beach, and Buddha Hill. Next to Iraq, it was the most intense three weeks of my life.
As someone said to me, "Pattaya is like an adult Disneyland, but the rides are better."

Great advice about dealing with the bargirls, and yes, I did buy my "girlfriend" some gold, and sponsored her for a short time.

I wish someone had told me this information then, but learning the hard way was more fun.
What I really enjoyed the most was the variety of restaurants, probably because I had been eating MREs for the six months prior.
Keep 'em coming.

First time- 2000, and there is nothing like the first trip. I was hooked and made several follow up trips. While less frequent now, it usually was 2/year. Times change, but the allure is still there, and there are stories you will have for life. You will also have memories that you will not tell anyone. :-)

With YouTube etc. now I don't think there is really too much of a newbie that is totally surprised, just a first timer. They all know what is there, the question is can they handle it and not get overwhelmed. Either way they will love it.

Most of them likely start in Bangkok and make their way to Pattaya a bit later in their vacation. BKK will get them acclimated a bit and Pattaya gets them hooked. Once hooked, BKK likely gets skipped. It did for me.

I agree with the 1 day rule, but after a few visits there is no reason you can't spend multiple days with one girl. By then you know the scene and not to get involved long term, even if you are a repeat customer. If you want to get her a gift - up to you.

#1 rule after not getting involved with a girl is never make plans (other than a booking), they always change, so go with it. The trip will be more enjoyable.

I will end with something I haven't heard in a while: "The worst day in Pattaya is better than the best day back home". I doubt that envisioned the current situation, but I look forward to the time when it is true once more.......

Ok Daz, you ask us to tell you about our first time in Pattaya.
my first time in Pattaya was in the 1950s,,, (my last time there was in the 1970s).
At that time Pattaya was only a very small fishing village.
Not at all a fancy place, there were only small older buildings with small businesses.
There were small fishing boats along the beach and only one old structure in the water. Apparently, it had been a fishing pier with only the pilings remaining.

Not a single other visitor than me at Pattaya.
The lovely Thai people in the shops, everyone with their delightful "Thai Smile."
There. I was introduced to the delicious "Thai Iced Coffee."

I came there with the desire to go water skiing.
Someone someway came up with a small boat with a small engine + a slalom water ski.
after I enjoyed the water skiing, I had food and drinks with the persons that I rented the ski boat from. Following dinner and drinks, we all settled into my hotel room for the night, the three of us slept very well together.

Looking back, I did things like this in so many countries while flying airplanes.
I miss those good old days.
My work was a pleasure, hard to believe they paid me quite well to go and do such lovely things.
So many great places/people on Planet Earth.
Other places/people have trouble competing with the "Land of Smiles."

Ok, tips for the newbies. Yes, this is going to be long. Pattaya will blow your mind if you aren't use to attention from the ladies. Like he said, they know how to work you like pros. First off, tell nobody your business. My cover story is "I've saved for an entire 2 years to come here and I'm a low level manager in retail." Never act like you have a dime to your name. Don't trust anyone. Farang can hustle you just as much as locals. Carry ONLY your daily limit budget for FUN.....nothing more but 1000 bhat "emergency money" tucked somewhere safe. Carry a business card of your hotel. I got lost miles away and it saved my butt. Plan how much "fun" you want to have and budget accordingly. Trust me, don't bring more than your daily budget. One night without self control can drain half you vacation budget if you don't know what you are doing or can't handle your drinking while caught up in the excitement. I've seen it happen to newbies. Don't touch the fucking bell!! I've done it once............or at least I think I did. Be careful. Keep your drinking costs down by ordering a Long Island Ice Tea. They are strong and just a beer will keep you going, perhaps, for 3 hours. But, I'm a lightweight as I don't drink at home. PAY FOR ONE DRINK AT A TIME. Don't carry a bin tab!! Will keep you safe from being overcharged.

I live in a city that have the most strip clubs in the US. Clubs were ALL nude filled with college kids. Pattaya really didn't do much for me because I've been there, done that, and even managed a strip club for a few months. Drama!! DON'T date a bar girl....don't be a "Captain Save a Whore" and know you are in a "movie". Just enjoy the show. Rule #1....don't get involved with ANY drama. I've seen a bottle get busted over a guy's head because the Farang had a big mouth and went after a Thai guy like a fool. Thai people are like one giant family. Mess with one and might as well be taking on the entire city. Mess around and they will come out of the woodwork. Get in trouble with the law and they will always side with the Thai. Be a "skippy" on a girl or treat her with disrespect and for 500 bhat, the girl will have motobike taxis guys come kick your ass or even kill you. I had a freelancer tell me that and I believe her. Not all how jump in Pattaya are committing suicide. Just a thought.

Just enjoy the show. Don't be loud. Be mellow. Wear a shirt at all times, and really important is learn the basic of Thai language. Use it and they will think that isn't your first trip and they won't mess with you as much. Girls will say, "why you know Thai? You have Thai wife?" Then say, "Mai tam a da" and just smile and have fun with the response. Best if you learn from the girls from Isaan their local language basics. Learn how to say "Hello" in Isaan. Sa bai dee bo. If you are asked your response is "bo". Use it! This will make it clear they know you aren't a newbie. The "massat" girls will bug you. If you want to be left alone just say "Sa wad dee khap" or the other and keep walking. Trust me, they will think you have a Thai wife and not push things further. Walk like you own the place or you will have girls pulling you to go into every bar around. If you get your junk grabbed by a ladyboy, don't freak out, just tell her you like girls way too much. The best conversations I have had were with lady boys. Strange to be talking to a guy, dressed like a woman, checking out other girls walk by and her saying, "nice ass". 555

And yes.......relations with a girl will seem so natural. No shame. Don't act shy....own what you are doing or you might get hustled. The first time you go for a massage and are specific with what kind of happy ending you want, and tell her at the desk will be the strangest experience of your life!! Be confident and have fun with it. I prefer massages with an ending over taking a girl. No drama, no chance of stuff getting stolen in your Hotel etc and it's cheaper. Book a day where you get 5 massages..it's heaven. Get a soapy massage!! Ask the girl to shake your hand as hard as she can. You will get an idea of how the massage will really be. If you meet a girl that gives good service then you can make her a regular. Consider seriously going to a legit massage place with real Thai massages with an honest cute good girl. Just be sure she hasn't worked in a bar. They are a good option for a great regular GF material and easy to meet and in a short time you will know you have chemistry while getting hands on. If she pats your face gently, she likes you. If you date her you will always get free massages. I have 3 in 3 cities that I frequent. You should too!! Be sure to tip them....200 bhat is average. After a massage you might get asked "you want gf"? She's looking for LT. If you like her ask for ST about 9pm. She will most likely stay all night anyway especially if you have a comfortable bed......yes, Thai people love to sleep. And yes, you will get coffee made for you in the AM if you tell them you like coffee. 2 creams 3 sugars khap.

When you first meet a lady and if she likes you, she will treat you like a BF. She will look after you. Get drunk and she will make sure you get home and in bed safely. Tell them UP FRONT after you have chatted her up exactly what you are looking for and offer her YOUR price. Barter UP not down. Expect to buy "gifts" but limit it to only one if you take her for a day. Your rules so make them clear. Never take her to a mall. He's right, one day max!! With so many options, why not. Get a copy of HER id at your hotel or before you take her LT for a few days if that's your choice. Doing this alone will keep her from any problems and drama happens. If you take her to another city, be prepared to get her on a plane if she acts up. This is your vacation don't let any drama queen ruin it. Remember, trust nobody and try to stay away from the ladies on Beach Road. There is a reason why she is on the street. Might have an STD or got caught at a reg bar scamming a customer. Buyer beware!! Let the Indians hunt in packs for them. Don't be THAT group of guys!!

Since you WILL be back as I have 10 times, always leave with 3000 bhat in your "travel wallet". Nothing better than a nice hot tub after a long flight and you won't have to pay the fees at the Air Port for exchange. Save some money, take the MRT to your stop. Most likely it will be NANA Plaza. Here is my final tip. Stay in a hotel for no longer than 3 days. Pick the next hotel 6 blocks away. Keeps everything new. Consider staying at Heaven at 4, on Soi 4. Best staff....say hi to Nuna the bartender. She will take care of you. I got a sore throat from the smog and she made me the best lemon, honey and rum "tea" to help me out etc.

I can go on and on. Have fun......be safe.....control your money AND your emotions. Stay clear of bar girls or working girls is my best tip of all. Yes they are whores...........but treat them with respect and who knows, maybe you can get a free night with a girl like I did from a gal in Soi Cowboy my first trip. It was an unbelievable story that would make a great book. Treat them like a human, have fun and you too might get that golden ticket!! Your best chance of getting that ticket is to never talk about sex and just have fun watching the crowd. Best part, this lady didn't even hustle me for a drink instead, she bought ME drinks at a bar up the stairs across the street at a club. If you can get the gal to be having fun, they don't want it to stop and it will go on and on and on and on. Thai people truly do live in the moment!! It's like they aren't capable of thinking past that day. Enjoy and like they say in the military, keep your head on a swivel and TRUST your gut feelings about everything. It just might save your life as it's saved mine on my world journeys. Chok Dee........which means good luck and is a way of saying goodbye.

A lot of wisdom in your advice. I definitely am addicted to Pattaya, having about 50+ trips there. First trip was back in 2000, and stayed at the Royal Garden Hotel next to the Royal Garden Mall. I was a true newbie, and didn’t know the system at all, only the reputation of Pattaya. Great experience, but it was really my second trip when I met up with friends in Bangkok and we all traveled down to Pattaya together that I had my proper introduction to the place. I’ve had all sorts of experiences there since then, including GFEs, LT and ST. I take a little different view than you. Everything you said is at least mostly true. Many, probably a strong majority of them are predators, but nice ones. Those that aren’t are quickly taken off the playing field as the find long term boyfriends or husbands. What you say about the gold is very true, although rings are so small and I’ve never had a girl ask me for a ring…. bacelets and chains though, a lot. Banks inThailand are relatively new business and doesn’t have at lot of Thai’s trust, so yes, gold is a convenient way to carry around your money. Also, the stories of sick grandmothers or water buffaloes are a good way to test the generosity of their farrang but the Thai girls really do send up 50% or more of their earnings to their family anyways, and there is often really a sick family member or something that needs repairing or replacing, there’s alway a need for more money. I’ve been to Isaan more than a dozen times and know. But the point you make is true, that it’s a test and the result will likely weigh on how much she values you from that point forward. Money does matter to Thais and will often trump feelings, but friendship and love does often blossom from these relationships, and not just from the men involved. Despite working in type of work environment all these lady are human and have human emotions. Be on guard but treat them kindly and respectfully.

50 trip ? Damn man.. how many st and lt you might have done. Good for you.. you must be devistated bcz of covid and travel restrictions.

@liwending2992

vvvvip st lt 50% off haha

@ermd96

@Anthony Dowling it’s there culture. Grandma or their teenaged sibling cares for the child as they make money for the family.

@murdochrc-imback7680

Gold is also a preferred commodity of pinays with many unsuspecting banyaga's (farangs) being lured into shopping centres with jewelry shops.
The Philippines is about 15% cheaper than Thailand but,Pinay women schemes are similar.

@sawadeeh

Social security in Thailand is your family. Out of job now with covid and no family? Tough luck.

I have been going to Thailand every year since 2010. After having travelled throughout Central and South America, I decided to take the Thailand plunge. it's a hell of a long trip from the USA, but well worth it when you arrive. Its a lot of fun, but you have to take it all in stride. The nights full of drinking catch up to you quickly. I learned most of what I needed to know about Thailand through videos like this one. I sure it is back to normal soon!!

@wurzel1873

First time was a 10 day trip in Jan 2006, visiting Bangkok & Pattaya.
It was a bit strange for a few days but soon became overwhelming with enjoyment. I was soon booking my next trip when returning to the UK for my return in April and then again in August.
The whole experience is addictive, once you've been to Thailand it stays with you
forever. But if you have a bit of time on you hands I would visit one of the islands either Koh Chang (personal favourite) or Koh Samui, its like your eyes are deceiving you with the natural beauty.

I agree. My first time, I was blown away. I had never experienced anything close to this before. I only stayed 4 nights and I fell in love each night with a different girl.

I went back every 6 months since (without COVID) and I fell in love every single night. I am a little older so I can keep my emotions in check. A younger guy does not have the experiences and will get sucked in.
