The song was written during ASCAP's Songwriters Retreat, a songwriting camp hosted by Miles Copeland in the French castle Château Marouatte. Mika was paired with other songwriters in a random room of the castle and they had to make a completed song by the end of the day. "Step With Me" was the result.
Describing the experience, Mika said "We got put in the little cottage with the mice chasing everywhere, and the ceiling falling in. And we were trying to keep this fire lit in the corner of the room because we were freezing... So the song that we wrote was comforting, sweet, and short, because we didn't want to spend too much time on it. [laughs]."
