@Have Wissmart I’m not trying to hate it. I’m just poking a bit of fun at how a massive community of witches and wizards who are more connected and more powerful than ever stay in hiding, and how this entirely separate culture somehow reflects the modern British government and school system.

I’ll always love the Harry Potter books / movies. But that doesn’t mean I can’t criticize the logic. When JK Rowling made the first book, it was a very short story compared to what she would create later. She didn’t need to think about the intricate nature of the wizarding world, all she needed to write about was Harry and Hogwarts. Even at the start, she was drawing on things she knew so it would be relatable to the kids who would start reading them. But as the books went on, she needed to expand on the world, and draw even more on stuff she knows, and so we get an entire magical culture that’s structured identically to the non-magical world.

Maybe the wizarding world just naturally adapted to the non-magical structure, maybe Hogwarts wasn’t the same school at the very start as opposed to when Harry joins.

The story is focused entirely on Harry. It’s not important to delve further into the intricate layout of the world more than needed, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be little things that don’t make sense when you think about it (like how Hogwarts only has 14 teachers in a school with hundreds of students split up over 7 years and 4 houses).

Again, I have always and will always love this series. But that doesn’t mean I won’t poke fun at it.

What I have learned from Harry Potter is this (Sources are my friends who watch it)

Nobody wants to be in Gryffindor unless your in Elementary because Harry Potter is in it.

HufflePuff is for those who are extremely nice and get walked over easily.

Nobody wants to be Slytherin because they are the villians, unless your emo.

And Raven claw seems to be the most forgettable house.

I like to define the four Hogwarts this way;
Gryffindor: Bold, courageous and often honorable, if occasionally arrogant. Warriors, thrill seekers and secret agents, the first to throw themselves into harm's. Example Gryffindors include Jonathan Joestar, Wammu, Brock Samson, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Sam Wilson/The Falcon/Captain America, Sterling Archer, Clan Brujah, the Black Hand of the Sabbat and Darth Vader.

Slytherin: Ambitious, cunning and highly focused achieving their goals, if sometimes ruthless in the pursuit of them. Politicians, criminal masterminds, community organizers, social reformers, social climbers, conquerors, budding captains of industry and upstarts trying to prove their worth. Example Slytherins would include Giorno Giovanna, Dio Brando, The Monarch, Tony Stark/Iron-Man, Adrian Veidt/Ozymandius, Clans Ventrue, Lasombra and the Followers of Set, the Egyptian goddess Isis and Charlie Magne of Hazbin Hotel.

Ravenclaw: The house of genius and flair for the dramatic, sometimes mixed with eccentricity or even madness. Home to screwball geniuses, knowledge brokers, scholars, mad/obsessive artists and mad/obsessive scientists. Example Ravenclaws include Joseph Joestar, Kars, Rusty Venture, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, Tony Stark/Iron-Man yet again, "Doctor" Algernop Krieger, Yusuke Kitagawa, Clan Brujah yet again and Clans Toreador, Nosferatu, Malkavian, Tzimisce and Tremere.

Hufflepuff: Amiable, unassuming and typically diligent. Hufflepuffs come in two distinct varieties, loyal followers and team players in one camp, and those who simply want to live a quiet, peaceful life, and maybe help people out sometimes, in the other. Example follower/team player Hufflepuffs include Robert E. O. Speedwagon, Okuyasu Nijimura, Koichi Hirose, Brock Samson again, Shore Leave, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes/The White Wolf, Two Ton 21, all henchmen from the Venture Brothers, Clan Nosferatu and Vaggie from Hazbin Hotel. The "just want a normal peaceful life" Hufflepuffs would include Joskue Higashikata, Yoshikage Kira, Arthur Dent, The Dude and Clan Gangrel.

That's if you're going by how the houses are billed, but not necessarily how they're portrayed.

Does that really matter though? I mean, it’s not like Hogwarts even teaches most students that much. Most of their studying seems to be done independently or with friend groups.

Snape is an obviously biased and reproachful teacher, who treats the students of other houses badly and doesn’t seem to help students whatsoever.

Hagrid, while a nice guy, never finished his education and obviously doesn’t know or teach his students many safety procedures and seems increasingly irresponsible as the books go on.

Binns supposedly sets almost all of his students to sleep in his lessons, and seems uncomfortable answering their questions or even interacting with them at all.

Trelawney seems to largely stumble through her lessons without much aid to students without a natural talent in Divination.

Filch isn’t even a teacher, but it’s clear that he despises the students, likely because he is a squib and is jealous of their ability to do magic. He even endorses torture techniques to be used as punishments for small infractions.

And Dumbledore seemingly does nothing to halt bullying, slurs, or dangerous creatures and objects and people from wandering about Hogwarts’ Campus.

And don’t get me started on the professors who took on the post at Defense Against the Dark Arts each year.

*Overall, it’s hard to see why Hogwarts is considered a prestigious or effective school at all. And, with the way so many students are left out to dry by professors and fellow students (sometimes with no support or punishment), it seems plausible that giving them an identity to grasp onto and people to make lasting easy friendships is a reasonable idea.

The only ones that require having viewed other seasons are Fantasy High: Sophomore Year and The Unsleeping City: Part 2, because they are each... well, part 2's.

There's also Pirates of Leviathan, which should be viewed after Fantasy High Sophomore Year, because that's when they introduce the setting of Leviathan.

The rest are all completely self-contained, although they do occasionally have little joke references to the others.

I would probably recommend just watching them in release order, just to catch those little jokes, but they all function perfectly fine on their own (except for those 3 exceptions listed above).

I would also save Misfits and Magic for a little while, just because it's still ongoing, and I prefer to binge them, but that's just me.

The Sorting Hat freely admits that what it's doing is wrong, but it can't stop doing it because that's its entire purpose (HP and the Order of the Phoenix). It could also be said that the Sorting Hat is the most tragic character in the series, as even after the Golden Trio leave school, and Hermione fights for Elf rights, the hat is still there, being forced to sort the students into the four houses.

You know, the thing is, the Sorting Hat literally calls bullshit on the whole houses thing in Order of the Phoenix, saying that, with the whole "return of the Dark Lord" thing people should really be sticking together instead of letting themselves be divided by arbitrary rules, but the teachers basically just go "oh, that wacky hat, always with its crackpot theories!" and it's literally never brought up again.

Fun fact: the VARK model of different learning types (visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic) is also this. Multiple studies have been done that prove that regardless of which learning type someone thinks they are or that Vark says they are, they actually all learn about the same amount from the same teaching methods, and that in some cases students being convinced they can only learn a specific way actually damages their ability to learn because they subconsciously pay less attention to teaching methods that don't suit the way they've been told they learn.

No, they meant do I listen more, look / try more etc.

My high school did something like this. We had a program that specialized in English and foreign languages, one that focused on Math and Science and one that focused on Life Skills. however, because most of the life skill classes (home economics, shop classes, etc) got cut or removed altogether, people assumed the "life skill" program were the ones who weren't good enough to go to the others and therefore dumb.

I was in the foreign language program in 9th grade and one bad grade forced me out so I had to go to the third program if I wanted to stay in school. Because of my "demotion" as everyone called it, A lot of teachers who used to call me smart and clever did a 180 real fast and started looking at me like I wasn't shit. Even the guidance counselor was just like "you're too dumb to have a future" and she didn't even talk to me. She just assumed based on what program I was in.

The teachers in that program were only there for a paycheck and were not in the least bit interested in teaching, so most classes were just an hour of fucking around or doing nothing. It sucked having people hype you up and then drop interest once you make one mistake. The program I stayed in had a lot of really smart and talented people in it but they just got tired of hearing that they weren't good enough so they played the dumb card, because they believed it.

@David Provencher Nothing I'm reading indicates that's true. Worst case, the negatives are only because of social stigma, not actually due to the tracks being ineffective in themselves; better separation between tracks to avoid that sort of social stigmatization would solve the issue.

And on the flipside, it's been shown that high-performing kids DO get benefit from being grouped with others of similar ability.

To outright state that track systems don't work seems like a significant stretching of objective reality.

Ironically, Brennan's argument about how ineffective this is actually explains her following statement.
This is tracking.
The magic world is so stuck in making kids fit a psychological norm they have created a world format that solidifies they will in fact be (by averages at least) the same person at 11 for the rest of their lives.
If you rearrange it like that, it makes sense, and terrifies me.

Brennan and Matt Mercer already discussed with each other about how brilliant Harry Potter is because it's world building is bafflingly stupid and incorrect.
I loved when they said about how ridiculously inefficient it is to use owls to deliver mail when teleportation, instant communication, advanced transport and even time travel are possible... But who doesn't want a cool personal owl? Who doesn't want a special wand and a patronus and House classification and all sorts? It makes it feel personal and inclusive.

I ain't a Harry Potter fan but I think about that conversation a lot when designing my dnd campaign. Sure, I am a Matt Mercer style nerd, who loves hearing about the coinage system like they said in that interview, but most of my friends just want a laugh when they get together.

I always have to step back from my plans and ask "But is this fun? It's interesting, but is it fun? This is a game, so how do I make this more fun?" I have to spend twice as long as I use to when I started DMing, but adding character quirks and outfits and silly voices and weird interactions adds so much more value to the game. I find my players remember so much more information when they are having fun too, as they are far more invested.

And this really cuts to the heart of engaging writing. Harry Potters world building makes zero sense when you look at it with a critical eye, a house of cards ready to be blown over... and yet people loved it. Hell, they still love it. People like talking about what house they'd be in, what classes they excel and struggle with, etc. It's fun to them, and that really is the key word.

People can mock Rowlings writing all they want, but her wacky world of xenophobic wizards persists in peoples minds while other, arguably much better thought out, stories are forgotten. She made something fun and easy to understand that appealed to kids because it very much felt like a childish fantasy, a day dream you'd have on a boring day at home or something.

@Skyler Polendina sorry - I wasn't referring to Harry Potter there, but houses in my school. The Achievers (that was the name for the Green House) won pretty much all sporting events. I remember that the 1 time they didn't was when my house, the Philosophers aka the Yellow House fought tooth and nail on Sports Day on track and field events to take the trophy by a hair. I, a mildly athletic nerd blessed with a bit of height, took medals in the short sprint, relay race, long jump and the long-distance run, and have never felt more proud of my physical feats.

@Rafael Markos a key part of being competitive is ambition and cunning which is the key trait of Slytherin. The reason Gryffindor is able to compete with them is the bravery to do risky stunts and plays.

Ravenclaw is okay but not great because they have a good theoretical knowledge of the game and strategy but not enough practical ability to execute.

Hufflepuff cares more about having fun and bonding with friends.

In Japan they have a variation of the home room system, students have an assigned homeroom, usually grades are divided by floor, and except for specialized classes like gym and chemistry students do all their learning and even have lunch in the homeroom while the teachers would move between them teaching the same subject to different classes at different times. After school extracurriculars are handled by clubs, even the school sports teams are just another club, which have a teacher oversee things. The effect is that you have the most socialization with whoever you get the same homeroom with but even most of that time is dedicated to study.

I live in Germany, and here we actually separate students into one of three school systems when they reach grade 5.
This used to be useful, as they were schools that focused either on vocation, general education or higher academic education.

But, as you might suspect, these days it's mostly seen as a ranking system and students in the "lowest" school are often told they're useless and they already failed at life.

Man, JK really didn't think this one through very hard.

And also, if you're gonna write 4 houses, 4 factions, why only have 2 factions do the majority of the story stuff? It basically boils down to Villain faction and Hero faction, and 2 other factions that don't really matter. I can't even remember what the other 2 are called anymore. Just write only 2 factions if you only plan for 2 of them to ever be relevant, I think. Maybe if you're Tolkien, you can write factions that are only meant to be in the background to flesh out the world and make it feel larger, but JK is no Tolkien. And it really seemed like JK wrote 4 houses because she thought 4 was a good number to have.

He's behaves terribly towards children, and somehow because he happened to love one of those children's mother and also died, it's all okay and he's actually a hero or something. @ShadeSlayer1911 it would have been more interesting to see a friend group from all four houses unite the school and battle against prejudice. Hermione is clearly Ravenclaw, Neville is Hufflepuff, and either Harry or Ron are Griffindor/Slytherin. The clichés of evil being predetermined by house were never fully resolved. Snape was the only really interesting one and it was worse in the books.

@jay snow she barely used two of them, and both of them are jokes. Hufflepuff is referred to multiple times as a house for the students that the other 3 didn't want (and has a total of one relevant student who exists largely to get Fridged at the halfway point of the series), and the (supposedly) geniuses of Ravenclaw only contributed a wishy-washy love interest and a flaky conspiracy nutter that's normally way off the mark while somehow not being the house of a character referred to throughout the story as "the smartest witch of her time". Heck, most multi-house classes we see in the series pair Griffyndor with Slytherin just because they're the only students that ended up mattering. It's not the only franchise I've seen that ignores a large chunk of what should be a more important part of the world because the creators just don't care, but it's certainly the one with the widest reach.

@Eddiemate There may be boarding schools with it. At any rate it's basically arbitrary as it is since as they said they're 11. It's basically like sorting kids on their zodiac signs. No adults in the 'real HP world' are likely to care about houses unless they're insane like Voldemort or work in the school system. Assuming there's no war being pushed by said insane person the houses are pretty much just to sort the kids, inspire useful competition, and maybe give them a sense of belonging away from home. They're not that serious.

Keep in mind you're talking about a series that says muggles are inferior, yet wizards don't have even come close to the same level of death dealing as normal folks. Voldemort had to launch an entire assault on a school and he still lost. Any respectable muggle military would have turned the place to dust in a matter of moments. The only issue with houses I had was how clearly favored some were, how strong the stereotypes were (all or nothing), and my favorite…. Students couldn’t be all or multi traited? What if a Slytherins greatest ambition was to be the best scholar, or to be the best dueler or officer? Hell what if their ambition is to open a magical orphanage to help magical orphans? Hmmmm?

The whole concept of the Houses in Hogwarts are an extrapolation of the sort school houses that actually do exist (most in Great Britain as its their tradition). It was a way to foster smaller groups within larger school (because school at the times sometimes had upwards of 150 per year/grade) as to help students by giving them some common ground as well as foster a sense of friendly competition between the groups which, in turn, fostered growth amongst them. It was also encouraged for younger student to ask older students within their same House for advice, help and such things like that as way for older student to both learn how to express what they have learned as well as some discipline. There was no real distinction between the Houses beside what their titles were and some of their histories they accrued at the school, which is to say; that the House Griffon didn't have any actual specific besides, the name, the color, the emblem (if there was one) and the House Head. Some Houses may have grown reputations but those were entirely within the school and could shift with new student supplanting older ones. Sometimes it was common for members of the same family to have generations within the same house just because educators who placed them would place them as a sort of outside 'family tradition' (so the Oxfront family sending all their kids to the same school might have them all be in House Griffin as fun nod to the family rather than anything else). This is the base of the idea of school houses which other forms of media extrapolate out of.

Fantasy and most fictional media however don't find that exciting enough though because in fiction, distinctions without tangible difference tend to blend together in the audience's mind. The solution is what you see in Harry Potter, some animes and other fictional mediums that employ school houses; where the School Houses are given a sort of identity or qualification for entry that the student are divined or placed into. Harry Potter does it with children characteristics (which are never permanent except Slytherin). Black Butler did it with more generational aspects; with the placement conforming more to what your family exceled in as you entered the school.

This isn't that big a deal, people are just making a fuss about it because the ones who are almost always evil in the stories end up in one house. My school had their 'houses' based on the grade/year you entered the school and its only real calls were to when sports days arrived.

I'd also like to help bolster your points by adding that cis kids are prescribed puberty blockers/hormone suppressants to treat medical conditions caused by the body overproducing certain hormones, and there's literally no public outcry over that; in fact, state legislatures here in the US have been making exceptions for cis children in their blatantly discriminatory anti-trans bills, putting the lie to their own rhetoric about those medications.

And a 1/3 is not comfortable numbers either. This isn't even mentioning that the legality doesn't matter when tourism allows for people to literally just travel to a country with laxer laws like Thailand which has no issues with finding not only a cheaper doctor for the surgery nor do they care about minors either. Something I only know cuz this was literally something my friend and I looked into when he was having dysphoria and thought he wanted to transition*. Then he went to a quack psychiatrist because he wanted to, ya know, *actually know if some other underlying issue was in his psyche before doing something stupid he could regret and the lazy quack just told him "Yeah I'm sure you know yourself better than anyone, I'll prescribe these drugs if you want to start the process." Something my friend didn't even realize how fucked up it was that she refused to do her damn job and just left it in his hands, so he backed off took my advice and we just decided he should continue meditating on it and see what happens. Surprise a year later, without any prompting he says to me first then our friends a month later "I realize I'm just a boy who likes feminine things, and now it's actually really annoying that our friends call me "she".

So I have consulted very personally with someone who lived a life "close to your own". It's the only reason I even give a damn, because I have had this close look into the shitheads that just wanna profit off sick people selling them the temporary cure to their self perceived image issues. People haven't come close to understanding the brain and what causes this truly, and just like I wouldn't advocate for anyone to get any amount of plastic surgery cuz it's disgusting the amount of image issues they prey on, this is about 10x worse for all the other damages this trend is causing. Nothing more than something some people are taking advantage of so they can make a huge buck on all these expensive drugs and treatments.

This is a worldwide experiment we've yet to even see the longterm consequences of, and I look forward to see the studies of how horribly some impatient people or people incapable of introspection who rushed into something they thought would make them happy, surprise didn't actually work. And for the adults who choose that, well sucks to be you, but you made your choice. Those kids can't consent. Thats as far as I can see plainly.

@α2 hi, actual trans person here to put in my two cents since people constantly argue points that affect my life without ever consulting anyone who lived a life similar to my own.

Obviously, it’s impossible to say that there are no sex surgeries happening on minors. It’s just impossible. But so many doctors already refuse to do them to minors, even with parental permission, and any legal establishment wouldn’t perform surgery on a minor without the permission of a parent or guardian. But regardless, why are people so fucking worried about that when most trans people don’t surgically transition? People always act panicked when trans people are brought up and scream about us “transing their children” when it’s not a bunch of “poor misguided” children we see in those clinics but adults and teenagers who have been discriminated against and denied their ability to live happily their entire lives. According to Vox, only 33% of trans people have done surgical transitions. That’s pretty fucking low for the fact that any time trans people are mentioned we constantly get harassed with accusations of warping people’s children.

Not to mention, puberty blockers are extremely safe and can easily be taken off of for trans youth individuals and are proven to be reversible. Since they don’t actually transition a child, only temporarily stop the functions of puberty such as growing breasts and hips for AFAB or body hair and body growth for AMAB, there’s no harm in doing them. It’s a relatively low-risk treatment that can be done for any possibly trans minors so that they can spend more time considering their thoughts and avoid dysphoria (which causes self harm and suicide and shouldn’t be treated lightly). And surprise surprise, you find out your child is cis after all and take them off puberty blockers, then puberty can continue and everything can relatively smoothly transition back to the way it was before.

So please, everyone, stop acting like trans people are ruining children god damn it. We understand what it was like to live in pain as a child, and we don’t want them to grow up suffering too. We don’t want them to have to medically transition at 10 years old just as much as you don’t, but we still want them to feel comfortable in their own damn bodies.

Well, in book 7 Dumbledore did say to Snape, a Slytherin, that perhaps "...we sort too soon" when Snape was showing immense bravery, which is a trait sought by Gryffindor. My man's got a point 😆

"Funny" thing, this is literally a thing in Germany. At the end of the fourth or sixth grade (depending on the state) your home teacher assigns you a "academic recommendation" according to which you have to go into one of the three levels of school. Leading to the highest degree (needed to study), a intermediate degree, or a basic degree.

Thankfully the recommendation isn't binding everywhere anymore and the levels of school are merging more and more, especially in places with few schools, but it's still incredibly fucked up.

@Steven Clark Yes, that is entirely the point. And it looks great on paper. Grouping students by ability level was one of those things we talked about during my teaching degree and I was excited at first to see how it worked out in practice. But my experience of that practice was horrible, at least at the school I taught at. And even if you don't tell the kids which set they're in, if you think the kids aren't going to figure out which class is bottom set, you're dreaming. And it not being a permanent classification might seem fine to adults, for whom a year doesn't seem that long, but to some kids, especially when they're really young, that year in bottom set can seem like forever. Not to mention that their development is such that, by the time they're out of bottom set, the damage has likely been done. I know that someone raised in that system is used to it, so they don't see the problems, but as an outsider this was all very clear to me. By the same token, I'm sure you'd see problems in the way my schooling worked that I'd miss.

It has 1) the pretty ones, 2) the guys (no, seriously, one school is just dudes regardless of if they're magic-users or not), and 3) the original villains and maybe there's other kids there? but we just won't acknowledge it unless we need some punching bags to show that our villain this season is powerful.

@Alexandra Pedersen "because it's for kids" has never been a valid excuse for poor or lazy writing. There are many kids shows with way more complex world building that doesn't fall apart once you think about it a little more.

Besides, it can still be a magical boarding school without it being a dystopian nightmare just for the sake of have 4 poorly thought out factions. I see this being a problem with lots of YA novels. The author writes in multiple factions without putting much thought into them, not considering the implications of implementing such factions into their world. Divergent is another example of this, and it's probably worse than the four houses of hp.

We were put in houses in my school and it honestly made and broke friendship groups, because one house (mine) was labelled as over-achieving cheaters, another was labelled the cool house etc. Thankfully the teachers didn't give a damn and taught us all equally 😂

The "grouping" just determins where they sleep tho, they all have the same classes with the same level of difficulty, same exams, same extracurricular activities. They even have joint classes with other houses, it's not like dividing them into maths, sciences and humanities when they're 11yo. Houses don't determine anything in the long run, except that slytherins get ostracised

Nah, I don't think that's how sorting works. We can see many examples of characters breaking pre-determined house stereotypes. Hermione, the smart one, isn't a Ravenclaw. Neville, not so very brave in the beginning, but look at how far he's come. I think the hat sorts them by reading their true nature and potential and that the stereotypes based on superficial abilities gradually came into being as they do everywhere

You're completely missing out on the fact, that you don't learn different things in the different houses. Your house doesn't determine what you learn, it categorizes based on your personality not on your skills. And btw, the main character is a Gryffindor so why wouldn't his best friends also be in Gryffindor? But Slitherins automatically being evil is kinda... wrong. There have to be some nice people. I've always wondered that, i agree on that.

Assigning children into groups based on personality traits is actually a bad idea for their development now that I think of it. Imagine the pressure to always act, think and be perceived a certain way so that you can continue to fit into your house and the preconceptions associated with it. You are sorted into this house based on a few personality traits, and you will feel pressure to fit these expectations, and this could have a negative effect on kids and their development. Can’t believe I didn’t realise this until now

I mean, to be fair, Slytherins main trait is supposed to be "cunning" it only became evil after the house of Slytherin was graced with Tom Marvolo Riddle and he later turned into Voldemort.

The same could happen to any of the other houses if someone either turns evil or good in their houses, like an evil Griffindor or a good Slytherin.

I wish this season was longer, because as is, having to kind of bring conflict in asap, it all feels a wee bit forced, and some of the “people living their lives in a fantastical and magical school” and the joy of seeing them grow as a group ends up being rushed or glossed over. Also a lot of the NPCs, by virtue of needing their usefulness in the storytelling to be damn near immediate, end up feeling very heavy handed in terms of characterization. Still a great watch of course, but if it was 8 eps instead of 4 they could really slow play some of the ridiculousness of the harry potter world

When I first read hp I was maybe 10 and thought everything was amazing. The older I got the worse I realized all these little worldbuilding and aspects are bullshit and you would never want kids or people in general to be in. Rowling's trashyness is way more evident in her writing then many realize

At first, in the lore was because the founders teached the students themselves, so they chose the students that would "represent" them. Later, idk. My guess is, as you have to have a certain trait to get in a house, and all of those traits are good things, it works as a way to encourage that trait to evolve. Then we get to slytherin, that is depicted as being evil, but that's just Rowling not having the ability to make any morally gray characters beside Snape, and maybe Draco. Snape made a little girl cry cause he made fun of her insecurities in front of everyone, and he's the literal worst fear of another kid. Draco is just a racist piece of shit until the last two books. In reality, there would be kids like Malfoy in every house, and there would be kids like Harry in every house, Rowling just doesn't show it to us. The only times the students are actually separated are when they go to sleep, and on quidditch, they study, eat, and etc together.

The real problem with Hogwarts houses is that Slytherin has all the negative aspects of choleric and sanguine humours and Gryffindor has all their positive aspects. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are balanced, fully representing melancholic and flegmatic respectively.

In Hogwarts they it isn’t based on who you are at the moment. Neville Longbottom was far from brave at the age of 11 but still ended up being one of the bravest characters in the book. The sorting hat is wis beyond imagination and knows which house will do best for each person based on who they’re associated with, everyone in the house, and who they will become. Snape was placed in Slytherin but acted very much like a Ravenclaw while schooling in Hogwarts once his teaching years began he showed Hufflepuff traits by staying loyal to Lillie and to Dumbledore. It wasn’t really about who they were as an 11 year old but which house the person will best learn and grow.

Except they are not splitting you up for classes, it is solely for where you sleep. Read the parts occurring in class, Harry seems to always have some Slytherins around him, and the other 2 houses have some named members joining him iirc.

I often use the term, muggle, for anyone who gets triggered by seeing someone else consort with a demon or undead. It's like in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, where the Mages Guild banned the "problematic" practice of necromancy to avoid triggering the muggles. In other words, they thought that they could make magic more "inclusive" by excluding the necromancers... Well, all that did was radicalize more moderate necromancers which caused the resurgence of the Order of the Black Worm (think Death Eaters, but much more effective, given one of the endings of Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall), which resulted in the Mages Guild be torn asunder into the Synod and the College of Whisper. A fitting punishment for magical "progressives".

The houses were actually just a genius way to avoid lengthy character exposition. Instead of having to infodump how Malfoy is probably evil, or how Harry is probably brave, JK can just indirectly tell the reader right away -- genius.

The funny thing is, when people bring up all these flaws in the wizarding world's education system/government/etc, they're completely right and make fair, valid points! But instead of completely discrediting and dismantling the source material's world building, I feel like it kinda adds to it? Like... the strict adherence to tradition is seen to be a massive setback in wizarding culture and the obsession with "keeping it pure" is what started these huge wars to begin with... It sets up the magical world in a really realistic way for everybody to have such a big "ooh aah isn't it romantic and ideal and whimsical how we live!" attitude when in reality they're seriously behind on the times by a couple centuries... and from the point of view of an abused/neglected child who is indoctrinated into this system and does not see the flaws in it immediately, as well... It just adds more layers to the world that are fun to pick apart tbh.

The fact that some British schools actually do this-

At my school we have red faculty, blue faculty, green faculty and yellow faculty. Each faculty has their own FCO (faculty coordinator). When your in year seven they put you in a faculty (not based on academic abilities or learning ability), and so do the rest of the students. Another reason for this is incase anything happens all they need to do is look at your tie (because your tie is the colour of your faculty) and easily track you. The school can change your faculty maybe once, twice even three times if your whole five years of being in secondary (If you do have behaviour problems they will change your faculty).The faculties also have competitions like on sports day. At the end of the year the faculty with the most positive points and least negatives get a really nice reward (sounds familiar...). I'm currently in blue faculty and ngl we are kind of constantly pressured to be the best. In our faculty assembly we are told stuff like "b stands for brilliant" and "blue is the best" by our faculty coordinator's. If I'm being honest it's not that bad but it kind of reminds me of Hogwarts.

I have said, since I saw the first Harry Potter movie, that a better writer would have made the Sorting Hat the main villain of the whole series.
A worse writer, myself, eventually ended up writing a song from the Sorting Hat's villainous perspective, and then this show came out and I feel validated in my analysis.

@Tasteful Tuna Yes, the Hat is in a position to speak up, and does so, but Ron typifies the responses by completely blowing off its warnings, saying that he could never be friends with a Slytherin. It can't refuse to sort, because that's its purpose for existing. As for House Elves, there could have been a whole arch exploring that dynamic - my personal theory is that they were actually breed by true elves, who warred with human wizards, lost, and left their servants behind when they went back to Tir na nog, or wherever they originated from. Wizard-kind took them in, and even the best just accepted their surveille nature, even though they shouldn't have.

@Leo Nielson So it's complicit in perpetuating a corrupt system in spite of seeing the problem with it and being in a position to speak up and be heard (that hat is very well trusted) or simply refuse to sort. That's not a whole lot better, tbh. There's an opportunity there for commentary about the uselessness of purpose next to potential, squandered by an author who can't see a world where it's possible to be something other than the role you've been assigned at your point of origin. Everything's externally predestined in her mind. The sorting hat has to be a sorting hat, Harry Potter was born to be a wizard and muggles are not, house elves are born to serve, etc., and that's just how it is and the mere thought of doing anything about any of it is a joke. You just have to bite the bullet and be a "tragic character".
