Career
Mac Dre's music gained popularity in the early to mid 1990s throughout the Bay Area, eventually receiving national recognition through his independent record labels Romp and Thizz Entertainment. He released many hit singles, such as "Too Hard for the Radio", and most recently "Feelin' Myself". He was the creator of the "Thizzle Dance", a popular dance which holds no specific standard. Hardship and controversy were staples of Mac Dre's career. After recording his first three albums between 1989 and 1991, Mac was charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery. His record label, Romp Productions, and his many references to "Romper Room" in his songs, coincided with a Vallejo robbery gang of the time calling themselves the "Romper Room Gang" and responsible for the robberies of many area banks and pizza parlours. Hicks was alleged to be a member of the gang. The rapper was sentenced to five years in prison in 1992.
In prison, Hicks gained some notoriety by recording the lyrics to songs directly over the Fresno County jail inmate telephone. His album, Young Black Brotha, was a result of such efforts, as well as guest appearances on fellow artists' songs, all while Hicks was still imprisoned. A later album, Back 'N Da Hood, was also made up of these prison-recorded songs.
After his release from prison in 1996, Mac Dre began releasing albums steadily, building pace in the early 21st century. Mac Dre's audience was growing, and mainstream hip-hop stations were beginning to give Hicks' music more airtime. Hicks relocated to Sacramento, California in 2001, where he began a label, Thizz Entertainment.
Death
On November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot to death while returning to his hotel after a performance in Kansas city. A car pulled up next to the white van carrying Dre along with other Thizz artists. Whether words where exchanged or not, the ordeal ended in the bloodshed of a bay area rap legend. The van swerved off the road and into a ravine where it ran into a tree. Word is that Dre was thrown from the van, but officials say they found him in the front seat, dead on arrival. Some believe that Mac Dre's killer was Kansas City rapper Anthony "Fat Tone" Watkins. In 2005 Watkins was murdered, allegedly by Bay Area rapper Mac Minister. In March 2006, Mac Minister was arrested by FBI officials.

Dream, scheme that's what I tell bitches
These punk niggas get pressed like twelve inches
I smell stinches, I been in the trenches
But they're still staring in my grill like dentures
I fuck with Brotha Lynch's and Andre Nickatina's
Tote forties, four-fours, tens, and even Nina's
I be the cleanest when I step into the arena
Have you seen her? She ran off renegadin'
She tried to juice me, but ain't no lemonadin'
Or eliminating, I be the last man standing
Sharp like Shannon, Rich like Gannon
I'm four deep at Brandons, and they ain't understanding
I do a J.R. Ewing, or Knots Landing
Mac Dre, I'm one nice dream
And I'll make your brain melt like ice cream
[Chorus 2x]
I'm Livin' It, distribute it
The streets are inhibited
By cut throat niggas just like me that out there getting dividends
[Verse 2]
I always feel like somebody's watching me
But ain't droppin' me or poppin' me or stoppin' me
Got animosity
For the way these notches be
Constantly, Jockin' me
But fail to pay me properly
I'm Stuck up in the clouds high velocity
Gone off that brocoli, and every hoe that I could see
I'm steady poppin' P, Its like rockin' D
I put the whamy on it nigga now I'm clockin' G's
More than Monopoly, boy this a knockin' beat
More game than Socrates, the champ boy when I compete
That constant be, poppin' E
When I drop a hee, its a knock when I drop boy and rock the beat
[Chorus 2x]
[Verse 3]
The turntables might wobble but they won't fall down
Its on, back hooked with Mac Mall now
We stack tall now, dope as raw pile
Pow, listen to that faggot scream OW
We gon' leave him leaking in the middle of the isle
Now they're wondering how to explain it to his child
Drunk with a smile, while staggering
Poppin' at a beezy, so I can have her in
A strip club, its uh... natin
Black, caucasion and even Asian
I'm leaving taste in her mouth, blowing ace in her house
To the face in her house, is you safe in her house?
[Chorus 4x]
The lyrics of Mac Dre's "Livin' It" are primarily about the rapper's success and the envy it attracts from others. In the first verse, Mac Dre boasts about his ability to dream and plan ("dream, scheme") while also acknowledging that others are jealous of his achievements ("they're still staring in my grill like dentures"). He name-drops other Bay Area rappers, Brotha Lynch and Andre Nickatina, suggesting that they share his experiences with fame. Mac Dre also distinguishes between his major crimes ("felonies") and minor ones ("misdemeanors"). In the chorus, Mac Dre raps about his ability to distribute drugs and make money, saying that the streets are "inhibited" by people like him who are "out there getting dividends."
In the second verse, Mac Dre talks about feeling watched but not apprehended, indicating that he's aware of others' attempts to take him down. He claims to be "gone off that broccoli," which is likely a reference to marijuana. The phrase "rockin' D" could refer to crack cocaine. He brags about making more than enough money ("More than Monopoly") and how his competition fails in comparison to him ("More game than Socrates, the champ boy when I compete"). In the third verse, Mac Dre teams up with Mac Mall and talks about physical violence in addition to sexual conquests.
