Career
Mac Dre's music gained popularity in the early to mid 1990s throughout the Bay Area, eventually receiving national recognition through his independent record labels Romp and Thizz Entertainment. He released many hit singles, such as "Too Hard for the Radio", and most recently "Feelin' Myself". He was the creator of the "Thizzle Dance", a popular dance which holds no specific standard. Hardship and controversy were staples of Mac Dre's career. After recording his first three albums between 1989 and 1991, Mac was charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery. His record label, Romp Productions, and his many references to "Romper Room" in his songs, coincided with a Vallejo robbery gang of the time calling themselves the "Romper Room Gang" and responsible for the robberies of many area banks and pizza parlours. Hicks was alleged to be a member of the gang. The rapper was sentenced to five years in prison in 1992.
In prison, Hicks gained some notoriety by recording the lyrics to songs directly over the Fresno County jail inmate telephone. His album, Young Black Brotha, was a result of such efforts, as well as guest appearances on fellow artists' songs, all while Hicks was still imprisoned. A later album, Back 'N Da Hood, was also made up of these prison-recorded songs.
After his release from prison in 1996, Mac Dre began releasing albums steadily, building pace in the early 21st century. Mac Dre's audience was growing, and mainstream hip-hop stations were beginning to give Hicks' music more airtime. Hicks relocated to Sacramento, California in 2001, where he began a label, Thizz Entertainment.
Death
On November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot to death while returning to his hotel after a performance in Kansas city. A car pulled up next to the white van carrying Dre along with other Thizz artists. Whether words where exchanged or not, the ordeal ended in the bloodshed of a bay area rap legend. The van swerved off the road and into a ravine where it ran into a tree. Word is that Dre was thrown from the van, but officials say they found him in the front seat, dead on arrival. Some believe that Mac Dre's killer was Kansas City rapper Anthony "Fat Tone" Watkins. In 2005 Watkins was murdered, allegedly by Bay Area rapper Mac Minister. In March 2006, Mac Minister was arrested by FBI officials.

Yadiadamean
This ain't no fairty tale of hansel and gretel
But more important cuddy
Fool it's the ghetto
Heavy metal pushin on the chevy petal
War in the street is the only way the beef is settled
Young monster, no guilty conscience
Hold a nigga hostage, empty out a cartridge
Scaredy niggas, do the fuckin ostrich
Hide ya head so a nigga can't pop it (blap)
You better watch it, see and be cautious
Act like an alien, we'll treat you like a martian
Ponderosa, 69 from santa rosa, no sir, we don't drink mimosa
Dre ain't know home boy, I'm benefited
Hop in the old school, lay low and dip a few
Baggage on both sides, T-Shirts and tennis shoes
Givin a nigga the blues, fight a fool win or lose
Never see me talkin to 5-o or givin clues
Read about me runnin from 5-o on the news
We tryina go cause 5-o is into fools
They beena fool
Boy you know what I'm finna do
See men on the DL is what I'm finna do
Hit the sto' fo' mo' OJ, Gin and Juice
It's 10 and 2 I'm on a mission like always
Tryina have my mail longer than hallways
Breakin every single one of my bitches they all pay
It's literally all day that these bitches would dre

From the country club

These blade ass niggas, they seem to trip
Stuart littles, with no viddles
Fuck with me, get sent to hospitals

So before you pull a lick
Put some mac dre in
The lyrics to Mac Dre's song "Stuart Littles" are a commentary on the urban environment and the struggles that come with it. The first line sets the tone for the rest of the song, as Dre describes the experience as a "mind trip." He goes on to suggest that many of the people involved in these struggles are not professionals, but rather amateurs who think they know what they're doing. However, in order to succeed in this environment, one needs to remain professional.
The rest of the lyrics detail the harsh realities of life in the ghetto, where violence is the only way to resolve disputes. Dre describes himself as a "young monster" with no guilty conscience, willing to hold a person hostage and empty out a cartridge. He warns those who dare to cross him to be cautious, and suggests that acting like an alien will result in being treated like a martian. The lyrics are an unflinching depiction of the brutality of the streets, but also a reflection of a certain code of honor that exists amongst those who inhabit them.
Overall, "Stuart Littles" is a gritty and uncompromising portrayal of urban life, and a defiant assertion of the rapper's independence and strength. It is a commentary on the harsh realities of street life, and a reminder that those involved must remain professional if they hope to succeed.
