I've Commited Murder ft. Mos Def
Macy Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby works down at the boulevard café
Just a fine young man with big dreams
Trying to make his one way
The owner is this man ole bitch who degrades
Him everyday
Then she fires him for no reason
Don't want to give him for no reason
[Chorus]
I've committed murder and I think I got away
I'm hiding at my mother's house corne get me right away
Right away
I have no intention of paying for my crimes don't fear
We're gonna get the next plane outer here and fly away
Fly away

When he's down it breaks my heart to see him
So I figured I'd talk to her woman to woman
I walk in and she's countin' her cash
Got so much cash her office looks like a green pasture
I said, "give him the little bit of money you owe him"
She said" get back bitch I ain't givin' you shit"
I said, "you ole bag, maybe you ain't heard but them are
Fightin words"

[Chorus]

And I don't feel bad about it
See baby there was this struggle
And I don't feel bad about it
As a result of our struggle
And I don't feel bad about it
But the good thing is
And I don't feel bad about it
We don't have to struggle no more

With a suitcase full of money
We flew to a Jamaican paradise
One thing I've learned through all of this is
Having money sure is nice
Me and my baby got married

He's working hard to make his dreams came true
As far as regrets I don't have any
Would You?

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

"I've Committed Murder" is a collaboration between Macy Gray and Mos Def, released in 2001. The song tells the story of Gray's character, who is deeply in love with a young man who works at a café on the boulevard, but is constantly degraded, belittled, and mistreated by his boss. One day, after he is fired for no reason, Gray confronts the café owner and demands that she give him the little bit of money she owes him. When the owner refuses and insults her, Gray snaps and kills her. She and her lover then flee to Jamaica with a suitcase full of cash, where they get married and live happily ever after.

The song can be interpreted in many ways. On the one hand, it can be seen as a simple revenge fantasy, with Gray's character getting even with the cruel café owner for mistreating her lover. On the other hand, it can be seen as a biting critique of capitalism, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and where the struggle for survival can drive people to do terrible things.

'respect your debt or protect your neck' and 'you know labor aint free, snatched the cash and made the dash like Oj and AC' = Real Hip Hop.  Take notice young ones of what real lyrics sound like.

@kevrichardson3864

Guru was one of the best him and DJ premier are like fish and chips 👌🏻

@lethalassassin1754

Not many people acknowledge Guru as one of the most elite MCs. Kinda upsets me too because he was capable of beating so many people battle wise/off the top freestyles were nicer than most peoples writtens. Knowledge wise as sharp as KRS One. Music wise a solid discography and he was never wack or fell off point. Not to mention a pioneer in this genre. Most of all he was real, a lot claim to be and he actually was what he personified.

@usainbolt5153

Guru's flow is just too nice
