I've Committed Murder Gang Starr Remix
Macy Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby works down at the boulevard café
Just a fine young man with big dreams
Trying to make his own way
The owner is this man ole bitch who degrades
Him everyday
Then she fires him for no reason
Don't wanna give him for no reason
I've committed murder and I think I got away
I'm hiding at my mother's house come get me right away
Right away
I have no intention of paying for my crimes don't fear
We're gonna get the next plane outta here and fly away
Fly away

When he's down it breaks my heart to see him
So I figured I'd talk to her woman to woman
I walk in and she's countin her cash
Got so much cash her office looks like a green pasture
I said, "Give him the little bit of money you owe him"
She said "Get back bitch I ain't givin you shit"
I said, "You ole bag, maybe you ain't heard but them are fightin words"
I've committed murder and I think I got away
I'm hiding at my mother's house come get me right away
Right away
I have no intention of paying for my crimes don't fear
We're gonna get the next plane outer here and fly away
Fly away

And I don't feel bad about it
See baby there was this struggle
And I don't feel bad about it
As a result of our struggle
And I don't feel bad about it
But the good thing is
And I don't feel bad about it
We don't have to struggle no more

With a suitcase full of money
We flew to a Jamaican paradise
One thing I've learned through all of this is
Having money sure is nice

Me and my baby got married
He's working hard to make his dreams came true
As far as regrets I don't have any
Would you?
I've committed murder and I think I got away
I'm hiding at my mother's house come get me right away
Right away
I have no intention of paying for my crimes don't fear

We're gonna get the next plane outer here and fly away
Fly away

Overall Meaning

The song is about a young man who is working at the boulevard café, trying to pursue his dreams, but is constantly degraded and unfairly fired by the owner of the café. The singer, who is presumably his girlfriend or wife, witnesses his struggles and decides to intervene by demanding that the owner pays him what he's owed. However, this confrontation leads to the singer committing murder of the café owner. She then flees to her mother's house before planning to leave the country with her partner, where they can start a new life with the money they stole from the café. The song ends with the newlyweds living in a Jamaican paradise without any regrets.

The song explores themes of justice, oppression, and the consequences of one's actions. The singer, who is also a victim of the unfair and oppressive café owner, decides to take matters into her own hands by committing murder. This act of violence, although seemingly a form of revenge, highlights the futility of violence as a means of achieving justice, and the slippery slope that comes with taking matters into one's own hands.

Interestingly, the song also seems to suggest that money and financial stability are more important than moral values. The singer and her partner are able to find happiness and start a new life in a Jamaican paradise, despite committing murder, simply because they have money. This message may be interpreted as a critique of a capitalist society that values monetary success over moral values.

Overall, "I" is a thought-provoking song that challenges listeners to consider the issues of oppression, justice, and morality. It also highlights the power dynamics that exist within relationships and the lengths that individuals will go to protect those they love.

'respect your debt or protect your neck' and 'you know labor aint free, snatched the cash and made the dash like Oj and AC' = Real Hip Hop.  Take notice young ones of what real lyrics sound like.

Guru was one of the best him and DJ premier are like fish and chips 👌🏻

@lethalassassin1754

Not many people acknowledge Guru as one of the most elite MCs. Kinda upsets me too because he was capable of beating so many people battle wise/off the top freestyles were nicer than most peoples writtens. Knowledge wise as sharp as KRS One. Music wise a solid discography and he was never wack or fell off point. Not to mention a pioneer in this genre. Most of all he was real, a lot claim to be and he actually was what he personified.

@usainbolt5153

Guru's flow is just too nice
