One's Second Thoughtlessness
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Reaching up to press my best friend's bell
On my tiptoes
Whatever made me climb this side of hell
Oh, God only knows

Lifting up another catch and slipping through the blind
It's... it's so easy
Lighting up another match to see what I can find
It's become so easy

But after a while
You can hear yourself breathe
What seems a long long while
You can feel yourself sealed

One's second thoughtlessness
Nobody's home
One's second thoughtlessness

One's second thoughtlessness
Here up on my own
One's second thoughtlessness

Sniffing around hope to get out
Smelling a scent that something is up
I've seen this song before
Is this the house my family lives - yes
Ah, I've been here before
Yes, I did it because, because
Yes, I did it because
Yes, I did it because, because
Yes, yes, I did it I did it because, because
No - because

One's second thoughtlessness
I am my own
One's second thoughtlessness

One's second thoughtlessness

As I stand alone
One's second thoughtlessness

Overall Meaning

The song One's Second Thoughtlessness by Madness is a reflection of loneliness and the consequences of our impulsive actions. The first stanza describes the singer reaching up to ring their friend's bell, but they question their motives for doing so. They state that climbing this side of hell is not worth it, suggesting that perhaps they're feeling low and are trying to reach out for company. The second stanza describes the singer as they break into a house, lighting up matches to see what they can find. It's clear that they're acting impulsively and exploring without considering the consequences of their actions.

The chorus then repeats the phrase "One's second thoughtlessness". Nobody's home, and the singer is alone, which only highlights the desperation they feel. They repeat the phrase, almost as if they're trying to convince themselves that they didn't do anything wrong. But then they realize that they've been to this house before - it's their family's home. This realization hits them hard as they ponder their actions and try to justify them with a "because."

In the last chorus, the singer acknowledges that they are alone, standing by themselves. The repetition of the phrase "One's second thoughtlessness" suggests that the singer realizes that their impulsive actions stem from a deeper issue - perhaps loneliness or a lack of direction. The song leaves us with the haunting feeling that our actions can have unforeseen consequences, and we can end up alone in the end.

So this and "(the Quickness of the Hand) Deceives the Eye" are possibly my two favorite Madness tunes of all time and it's not because they're also among the rare or less mentioned of their already immensely amazing body of work. I could honestly listen to every record back to back on loop well into oblivion
