Thunder and Lightning
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't look back or make a sound
Or change your mind in any way
I wouldn't want to turn you round
Even if I thought you'd stay

You take me further than I ought to be

Then thunder and lightning
When it's over
Then thunder and lightning
Turn me over

I had to get up and out take a walk in the dark
To clear my mind for the very last time
Washed away in the cold blue rain
I know where I'm from and I know where I'm going to
Say goodbye for the very last time
Washed away in the cold blue rain

Stop thief making off with my heart
Even if I caught you so
While she tears me apart
Turn around to see her go

Then thunder and lightning
When it's over
Then thunder and lightning
Turn me over

Don't look back or make a sound
Change your mind in any way
I don't want to turn you round
Even if I thought you'd stay

[Repeat: x 2]
Then thunder and lightning
When it's over

Then thunder and lightning
Turn me over

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Thunder and Lightning" by Madness evoke a sense of turmoil and heartbreak within a relationship. The singer implores their partner not to look back or change their mind, even if they were to stay. The singer knows they are being taken further than they should be, and yet they continue down this path. The chorus then uses the imagery of thunder and lightning, a common metaphor for emotional intensity, to describe the ups and downs of the relationship. The singer seems to be resigned to the fact that their relationship may be tumultuous and unpredictable - they just hope to make it through the storm.

The second verse takes a more introspective turn, describing the singer's need to clear their mind and say goodbye to their partner. The use of the phrase "very last time" implies that this relationship has gone through a cycle of breakups and reconciliations, and the singer knows they need to move on for good. The third and final verse describes the inevitability of heartbreak when one's trust is betrayed. The use of the phrase "stop thief making off with my heart" represents the feeling of being robbed of one's love and emotions, while the partner tears them apart emotionally.

Interesting fact for the discerning gentleperson - Mrs Suggs also did a song called "Thunder and Lightning" with top band "Deaf School". Two great songs.

@ZeldaFitz

Sounds so synthetic. The really weak sounding drum machine on this album is awful. To be fair this isn’t a bad song, unfortunately nobody was listening back in 1988.
