Nothing Else to Do
Maggie MacNeal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time I see his face I almost cry
Wouldn't see it my way, I still wonder why
But that is over and that is past
I hope that all my memories will die at last Every time I hear that sound I start to smile
But I think that will pass after a little while
And reading papers, watching TVPasting all the pictures made from him and me I've got nothing else to do'Cause my baby said we are through
I don't know why
I don't know why I've got nothing else to do
Yes, my baby made me feel so blue
I don't know why
I don't know why I still remember how we met
And when he said: "You are my guardian angel" I don't know why
I don't know why I still remember how we met
And what he said: "You are my guardian angel"My guardian angel I've got nothing else to do'Cause my baby said we are through
I don't know why
I don't know why I've got nothing else to do
Yes, my baby made me feel so blue
I don't know why
I don't know why I've got nothing else to do'Cause my baby said we are through
I don't know why
I don't know why I've got nothing else to do
Yes, my baby made me feel so blue

Overall Meaning

In "Nothing Else to Do," Maggie MacNeal sings about the pain of a recent breakup. She describes how every time she sees her ex-partner's face, she feels like crying, even though she knows that it is over and in the past. The sound of their relationship still makes her smile, but she recognizes that this feeling will not last forever. She spends her time reading papers and watching TV, pasting all the pictures made from him and her. The song is about the end of a love affair, and how the memories linger even when the relationship is over.

MacNeal's vocals convey a palpable sense of longing and yearning, and the repeated motif of "I don't know why" highlights the confusion and frustration that come with the end of a relationship. The song's slightly mournful melody and wistful lyrics are relatable to anyone who has experienced a heartbreak. While the song's theme may be a bit of a downer, it is ultimately a reminder that life goes on, even after a breakup.

on I Love You This Much

I listened to Jefferson's version and I could understand him a lot better than Maggie MacNeal. I found quite a lot of mistakes in these lyrics. For example: "silver can be part of you etc" should be "if I can't be part of you then I don't have to live". And "but if it means singing back you must then in there it's lost" should be "but if it means signing documents then it matters not". There is more, but I'll leab-ve it here.
