1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Protected by some, taken granted by all
Time honoured thoughts end disapproving
With all dominions ever ready to fall
You won't beat the pack, that's no revelation
Come snapping their jaws right on your heels
Making your way through all this confusion
I know what happens
The moment you turn out your light
And I know what happens
It happens to me every night
You start to breakdown, breakdown
You're going to crucify yourself, you're lost
When you get pushed 'round, pushed 'round
Another refugee to bear the cross
Stand up, fight back
Now every course, blighted by answers
Acutely profane, no help in this brawl
And from the mouths that never felt hunger
Comes no deliverance, just a timely withdrawal
What of your thoughts not yet discovered?
Along with the fears, they both play their part
You'll work it out then run for cover
The truth will arrive like a bolt through your heart
I know what happens
The moment you turn out your light
And I know what happens
It happens to me every night
You start to breakdown, breakdown
You're going to crucify yourself, you're lost
When you get pushed 'round, pushed 'round
Another refugee to bear the cross
Breakdown, breakdown
You're going to crucify yourself, you're lost
When you get pushed 'round, pushed 'round
Another refugee to bear the cross
The lyrics of Magnum's song "Breakdown" speak of the struggles and challenges one faces in this complicated world. The first verse talks about how some people are protected while others are taken for granted, and how even time-honoured thoughts can be disapproved with every dominion ready to fall. The second verse talks about the difficulty of standing out from the pack, with others snapping at your heels and confusion making it hard to stay on track. The chorus emphasizes the feeling of breakdown, the sense of being lost and crucifying oneself, with every push and shove turning one into another refugee who bears the cross.
The bridge highlights the hopelessness of finding answers or seeking help, with empty words from those who never felt hunger or pain. The lyrics then talk about the thoughts and fears that play a part in every person's life, and how, when everything seems hopeless, the truth arrives like a bolt through the heart.
