1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

So Far Away
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That carries them further to nowhere
The fields will be gorged upon the sacrifice made
Despite all their efforts to take care
There's no talk about anyone
Lying out in the rain
They're quite certain to carry on
So please don't praise those mindless games
With reckless claims
Of glory and fame
Talons of steel will seek them out on the day
Intent upon venting its fury
Onward they move and with complete disregard
Of danger while doing their duty
Still no talk about anyone
Lying wounded in pain
Hearts stop beating is this the one
To carry somebody's name
So please don't praise those mindless games
With reckless claims
Of glory and fame
Mighty and strong
So very young
There they will stay
So far away
A sensitive time approaches just before dawn
That carries them further to nowhere
The fields will be gorged upon the sacrifice made
Despite all their efforts to take care
Still no talk about anyone
Lying wounded in pain
Hearts stop beating is this the one
To carry somebody's name
So please don't praise those mindless games
With reckless claims
Of glory and fame
Mighty and strong
So very young
There they will stay
So far away
The lyrics to Magnum's "So Far Away" are a commentary on the senselessness of war and the loss of life that it brings. The first verse describes a "sensitive time" just before dawn, when soldiers move "further to nowhere" and make sacrifices in the fields. Despite their efforts to take care, there is no talk of anyone who may be wounded or suffering. The soldiers carry on with complete disregard for their own safety, believing that they are doing their duty. The chorus urges people not to praise "mindless games" of war with "reckless claims of glory and fame," highlighting the senselessness of war and its devastating consequences.
The second verse continues this theme, with the soldiers facing danger as they move forward. Again, there is no talk of anyone being wounded or in pain. The chorus repeats, with the same message of not glorifying war. The final verse describes the soldiers as "mighty and strong" and "so very young," but they will remain "so far away" from the loved ones they left behind. The repetition of the opening lines and the absence of any resolution in the lyrics emphasize the endless cycle of war and the ongoing sacrifice of young lives.
