1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Freedom Day
Magnum Lyrics

Liberty denied
Searching into the deep
Looking far and wide
Endless talking
Nothing much to hide
No sense asking the way
No one on your side
Don’t look back
When your life’s an empty page
Keep on track
Don’t get filled with rage
So take it somewhere
Living your life, breathing in the air
Sing for the human race
Louder than oceans roar
Sing till your voices break
Till you can’t sing no more
Dark thoughts will fly
Into the clouds passing us by
Shout for your freedom yell
And they will hear the chorus
Bang on your freedom bell
They wouldn’t dare ignore us
Into the flame
Out of the earth, nothing shall remain
Cold wind blowing
One and twenty lies
Healers healing
The truth with sympathetic eyes
Rainbows over
Naked and exposed
Midnight, lost in the dark
Paradise is closed
Don’t look back
When your life’s an empty page
Keep on track
Don’t get filled with rage
So take it somewhere
Living your life, breathing in the air
Sing for the human race
Louder than oceans roar
Sing till your voices break
Till you can’t sing no more
Dark thoughts will fly
Into the clouds passing us by
Shout for your freedom yell
And they will hear the chorus
Bang on your freedom bell
They wouldn’t dare ignore us
Into the flame
Out of the earth, nothing shall remain
Sing for the human race
Louder than oceans roar
Sing till your voices break
Till you can’t sing no more
Dark thoughts will fly
Into the clouds passing us by
Shout for your freedom yell
And they will hear the chorus
Bang on your freedom bell
They wouldn’t dare ignore us
Into the flame
Out of the earth, nothing shall remain
Magnum’s song Freedom Day speaks to the plight of individuals whose freedom has been denied or withheld. The opening lines introduce the listener to an individual who is actively searching for liberty but has been unable to find it. The phrase ‘endless talking, nothing much to hide’ suggests a lack of transparency among those in power, who fail to provide a clear path to liberty. The song, however, encourages individuals to press on and not look back even when life seems like an empty page. Rather, they should keep on track and not give in to rage. The pointed lyrics advise listeners to assert their freedom and sing their voices to break until they can sing no more. Dark thoughts will dissipate, and freedom will prevail.
The chorus emphasizes the importance of singing for the human race, louder than ocean’s roar, banging on freedom’s bell with the knowledge that anything that stands in the way of freedom will be obliterated in flames. The song touches on the importance of seeking the truth even if it means exposing oneself to the elements. It acknowledges the presence of healers who sympathize with those in search of freedom. The closing lines suggest that paradise may be closed, but it is important to continue the fight for freedom. In essence, Magnum’s Freedom Day is a rallying cry for individuals to fight for their right to liberty, no matter what the odds may be.

Saw Magnum in Newcastle last Thursday. The performance was exactly as I expected. Magnum continue to impress. They play from the heart, for the fans. They are truly a light in the black in these dark days where drab, insipid pop music pervades our airwaves.

One of my top favourite songs from "The Visitation", which is actually my second favourite album from Magnum, after Princess Alice.. Rarely bands become so much better with age.. They do. :o))
