1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Midnight
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But it's only lovers know the reason why
They stay together
And when your time has come
You'll soon discover look at what you've done
Could be forever
Your open arms say everything
It seems I might be here all night
I'll light a candle bright
To show your way tonight
Midnight you won't be sleeping
I won't be leaving
Off with my foolish pride
Too much in trouble never could decide
Always a struggle
Now I know how it feels to cry
It's only lovers know the reason why
They stay together
Your open arms say everything
You're always there
It seems I might be here all night
I'll light a candle bright
To show your way tonight
Midnight you won't be sleeping
I won't be leaving
I'll light a candle bright
To show your way tonight
Midnight you won't be sleeping
I won't be leaving
It seems I might be here all night
I'll light a candle bright
Magnum’s “Midnight” is a love ballad that portrays the depth of emotions that lovers experience in relationships. The song starts by acknowledging the pain that comes with love, with the lyrics- “I know how it feels to cry, but it’s only lovers know the reason why.” The song shifts gears and begins to speak more positively, proclaiming the endurance of love by stating that lovers stay together. The song suggests that even when it seems like the relationship has ended, love is everlasting, and this may be discovered in hindsight. The concept of open arms in the verses is symbolic, indicating that the person is always there, willing to accept the other person despite their flaws, and in darker times of the night, will be a source of comfort and safety.
The chorus emphasises this concept of eternal love, with the repeating line “I’ll light a candle bright to show your way tonight. Midnight you won’t be sleeping, I won’t be leaving” suggesting a sense of unending devotion to one another. The second verse follows the theme of difficulty that comes with love, with the lyrics- “Too much in trouble never could decide, always a struggle.” This verse indicates the conflict that’s inevitable in any relationship, clinging to the idea that love is worth the effort despite the hardships. The song ends with a somber tone again, with the lyrics, “It seems I might be here all night, I’ll light a candle bright.” This final line suggests that even though the night is long and difficult, the singer is willing to light the way through the darkness and stick with their lover, come what may.
