1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Universe
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh cold winds blow sands of time in our faces
Beggars plead with others greed in high places
Oh love is won love is lost leaves no traces
Take your eyes across the seas past the mountains
Oh do you hear through its far someones counting
People write armies fight children shouting
Oh love is warm love is real love's abounding
Who holds the answer to the universe
Who holds the answer to the universe
Eagles fly past the sun to the rainbow
Yes they decide where they're from where they can go
But no one cries someone hides in the shadows
Oh love is kind love is yours love is mellow
Who holds the answer to the universe
Who holds the answer to the universe
Who holds the answer to the universe
Magnum's "Universe" is a song that speaks about the vastness of the world and the challenges those who inhabit it face. The song is a reflection on the numerous beggars out in the open spaces who plead with those in high places consumed by greed. The cold winds continuously blow the sands of time right in their faces, transiently embedding the struggles of the people within time. The lyrics ponder on the uncertain nature of love, with a significant emphasis that it doesn't leave any footprints behind even though it is capable of transforming lives.
The second stanza communicates a message of hope, urging us to take our eyes beyond our surrounding and look farther in the horizon, past the mountains and across the sea. The lyrics suggest that someone, somewhere, may be keeping track of things, counting them. Yet, around the world, armies fight, and children scream; the warm, reassuring loving embrace of love transforming into something much more harsh and cold. The third and fourth stanza once again pose a critical question; who holds the answer to the universe? The answer is not provided, leaving listeners to reflect on the possible implications behind such a question.
