The Mahotella Queens first came to prominence in the 1960s as backing singers for the 'Lion of Soweto' Mahlathini. As well as recording with Mahlathini, they released a number of albums in their own right. They were able to use their fame to become highly influential figures in the fight against apartheid.
The death of Mahlathini in 2000 lead to them recording the album Sebai Bai in his honour. This album brought them even greater international attention and the Womex award.
Now in their 60s, The Mahotella Queens still record and regularly tour with their compatriots Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Bahlengikazi
Akenizameni ikhambi elinzulu
Saze saphela isizwe sakhithi
Siqedwa
Aw yingculaza
Bodokotela
Akenizameni ikhambi elinzulu
Saze saphela isizwe sakhithi
Siqedwa
Aw yingculaza
Saze saphela isizwe sakhithi
Siqedwa
Aw yingculaza
Nixoxa nihleke
Nomngani wakho
Ngomzuzwana nje
Kuthiwa akasekho
Nixoxa nihleke
Nomngani wakho
Isikhashana nje
Kuthiwa akasekho
Aw yeyeni bo
Bakithi
Qaphelani bo
Aw inculaza
Aw yeyeni bo
Bakithi
Qaphelani bo
Aw ingculaza
Saze saphela isizwe sakhithi
Siqedwa
Umashayabhuqe
Saze saphela isizwe sakhithi
Siqedwa
Aw yingculaza
Saze saphela isizwe sakhithi
Siqedwa
Umashayabhuqe
The lyrics of Mahotella Queens' song "Sela Ndini" are in isiZulu and talk about a nation that is falling apart. The song talks about the need to be careful in the face of impending doom, to guard oneself against destruction. The song's message is one of warning to those who aren't being vigilant and urging them to be attentive to the issues affecting their nation.
"Bodokotela" and "Bahlengikazi" refer to doctors and nurses, respectively, who are needed to heal a nation that is almost on the brink of collapse. The phrase "Akenizameni ikhambi elinzulu" roughly translates to "raise the flag high," which may be referring to the importance of national pride and patriotism to a nation that is facing challenges.
The line "Nixoxa nihleke Nomngani wakho" means "Let's talk and laugh with your friends," but the ensuing line warns that even in times of laughter, one should be aware of who is missing and who has already succumbed to the challenges facing the nation. "Umashayabhuqe" is a term that refers to something or someone that is highly dangerous or destructive, emphasizing once again the precarious state the nation is in.
Overall, the Mahotella Queens' song "Sela Ndini" delivers a powerful message about the need for vigilance and care in times of adversity, stressing the importance of patriotism, community, and leadership in order to overcome challenges and rebuild a nation.
