[4] Taking its name from the roving short-fin sea predator, MAKO has cast upon Boston shores after conquering the Hudson Valley, performing with the likes of Thurston Moore and Japanther. With a sound that draws from Scott Walker to the Smiths to Led Zeppelin (minus the Wolfmothered overhype) Mako's thick riff-heavy indie rock is augmented by the hauntingly long voice of vocalist Hunter McClamrock, at once equal parts Brett Anderson and Adam Ant, delivering a sound that glides effortlessly through the modern rock ocean. Shallow-water guitar shine and deep lyrical introspection add up to one of the city's more unexpected arrivals. Sharks patrol these waters, indeed.

The Promise

Someday we will get it right
We're always changing direction, surfing on a sea of lies
Temptation swings on a pendulum back and forth before our eyes
Roll out the next generation, were bought and sold
And running out of lies
When the rules have all been broken
A forgotten king in the house of queens
A begotten Christ in a den of thieves
From a stone in the ocean to the ghost of all your dreams
Someday well get it together some day we will get it right
We only chance for the better hoping there's and end in sight
Salvation calls it creation reach for it and watch it shine
The hopes and fears of our nation are growing old
We're running out of time
When the rules have all been broken
Be a slave to the machine
A forgotten king in the house of queens
A begotten Christ in a den of thieves
From a stone in the ocean to the ghost of all your dreams
I don't know where I'm going but i do know where I've been
I do know where I've been
I do know where I've been
I do know where I've been
The lyrics of MAKO DC's song "The Promise" delve into themes of perseverance, societal disillusionment, and the struggle to find one's place in a world filled with deception. The song begins with the acknowledgment that someday, a connection will be made and things will be set right. However, the constant shifting of direction and the prevalence of lies make it difficult to achieve this goal. The singer references temptation swinging back and forth before their eyes, signifying the ever-present allure of deceit.
The next stanza paints a picture of a society where rules have been disregarded, leading to individuals becoming slaves to the machine and losing their individuality. The contrasting imagery of a forgotten king in a house of queens and a begotten Christ in a den of thieves hints at the loss of power and the spiritual corruption that arises in such a society. From being a small insignificant presence in the vastness of the ocean to becoming a ghost of shattered dreams, the lyrics suggest a gradual loss of hope and a realization that time is running out.
The chorus reiterates the hope of eventually getting it together and finding the right path, but it also acknowledges that the chances for improvement are limited. The reference to salvation and creation signifies the longing for a better future, yet the hopes and fears of the nation are becoming obsolete as time goes on.
The concluding section brings a personal perspective, expressing a sense of uncertainty about the future. The repetition of "I do know where I've been" implies that while the singer may not know their exact destination, they have learned important lessons from their past experiences.
Overall, "The Promise" reflects a deep introspection into the challenges and disillusionment of contemporary society, as well as an enduring resilience to keep moving forward despite the obstacles.
