I'd argue that you don't have to even have watched an anime to have heard this song in recent years. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt in that you might not watch youtube shorts or anything like that, but there was seriously time where I couldn't go a day without seeing any sort of short with this song. not to mention that anime itself is becoming VERY popular. In my class, I used to be known as the kid who watched "anime", but now I'm "the kid who's been watching anime for years" because literally everyone knows about it now. The amount of times I've heard this song used as a "sad moment" song in a youtube video from youtubers who have nothing to do with anime is incredible. About mainstream music, I think now more than ever, that term is useless. A song gets popular for maybe a week or 2 at most, and then "fades" out. There's so many fans of so many new subgenres, old types of music are blowing up again, and so many artists blowing up at the same time. I doubt there will ever be another song that defines an entire section of time, unless you want to start sectioning time into weeks instead of years.

I remember listened to it for the first time in 2004, when my high school friend gave me this CD of anime songs compilation. The file name written as BOA - Duvet acoustic ver. (OST Serial Experiment Lain). I know S.E.Lain from a magazine but can't afford to watch the series on internet. Since D-1 this song has this magical feeling where it'll accompany you to sleep even during the hard times.

Finally in 2012 I found the anime on YT and listened the original ver. This song really fit Lain character so much and I'm soo happy that more people are listening to this song nowadays :)
